We are FINALLY seeing the light at the end of the tunnel of our flood renovations so I'm starting to think of what I want to do to my shop/storage room when we get back in. I'm adding shelves to some walls of course, going to have a 5' workbench on the wall with the window, but the question is, do I add peg board for my hand tool storage? I had everything in in a rolling chest with drawers and a lower cabinet before but it seemed to get disorganized quickly. Is peg board worth the effort and is it really that much more convenient?

I put a peg board up thinking it would help me be more organized, but it didn't. Tools still got left all on my workbench.

Most of the time I'm in such a hurry, that when I get done I just pile the shite on my workbench.

I like drawers for my mechanic type tools - wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, sockets... but I use peg board above my workbench for larger items like levels, squares, hammers. I do keep a few pliers and screwdrivers on the pegboard as well for easy access. It also keeps people out of my tool box when the wife or son need a screwdriver.

The new shop I just built likely will not have any pegboard in it.

Both - I have pegboard on the wall above the work bench with drawers below. I've done this at the last three houses I've owned. No reason not to use the wall space above the work bench.

I went with shelves and large bins, organized by type. I've got my plumbing stuff in one bin, my batteries and chargers in one, my hand tools like hammers, screwdrivers, pliers etc in one, and one is a junk bin where anything else gets dumped. Also bought a larger open top tool bag with slots on the side that I keep the stuff I use around the house most often in. My wife found a set of 8 foot cabinets for free, so I have 16 feet of work space where I leave my compressor, small shop vac, table saw, and other large power tools on top of. When I need to work, I open the garage door and back out my Jeep, then set up a folding table and grab whatever large tool I need and sit it on that.

But the best thing I did was buy a set of 24 interlocking plastic small bins from Harbor Freight for screws, nails, and other stuff. I built a little wood rack to sit them on, and I have two rows of 12 with all of that organized by size. 2 inch screws, 3 inch screws, nails/staples for the nail gun, power sander pads, etc.

I built a shed just over two years ago and I went with slat walls and cabinets from these guys.

I love them.

I have a 44" box that I took the wheels off of and built into the bottom of my work bench. I also have peg board above the bench for misc. stuff like levels, saws, hardware organizer, drills etc.

More of a tinkerer. I enjoy building and fixing stuff but I don't have any tools for legit woodworking. I have a miter saw, table saw, and hope to get a good router and table set up soon so I can start learning to do small wood pieces.
