Too late to plant a small food plot?

Life has a tendency to get in the way of perfect timing lol. But the ground is still very wet and its not a very big plot im planning on. Probably 50x50 Ground has never been planted and its all woods so the soil is very fertile. I just got a mix of bulk seed from local co op. Got a mix of winter wheat, crimson clover, daikon radish, sugar beets, trophy rape, 7 top mustard.
Gonna plant tomorrow. Hopefully it takes but if it dont it was only like 10 bucks. Is it too late? No frost planned for the next 7 days from what i can tell

Add a 50lb bag of cereal rye. I promise if any of that doesn’t come up it will

Better add a little rye grass to that mix. If all else fails rye grass will grow in the bed of a truck

Can always just go in and fertilize honeysuckle, or other browse in the area you hunt.

is that not the same as winter wheat?

Add a sack of triple 13 and you will be good

No not the same, a hard freeze may kill the wheat but the rye will be ok

I plan on going throw some rye over a few plots just to have extra coverage this week. It will grow. Hopefully deer will come to eat it.

Due to lack of rain I just planted my stuff last Sunday. If you can ever so slightly turn the soil over while not going very deep you can probably a lot of the moisture while getting the seed in the ground. Also I wouldn’t bother planting rye grass. It looks pretty but has no nutritional value.

Rye (not ryegrass) grows under colder temperature than maybe any other food plot seed you can get. Germinates at low temps too. So for really late season plantings rye is the seed to plant.

I know. I was responding to the person that said to spread rye grass

FYI there are different types of rye

As one poster said, add 50lb bag of 13-13-13, but also add a bag of of lime. More times than not soil pH is acidic, so the lime raises it to more neutral which is what most plants need to grow. Decayed grass and leaves from forest will make the ground acidic. Have to have both fertilize and the correct pH to grow a great foodplot.

I’m planting about 5 acres tomorrow. Probably buck oats, clover and some greens. I’ll try and get about 200# per acre of fertilizer down. I’m sure something will grow

Get some crimson clover with oats. Hope you get a late frost

Never seen wheat die from a hard freeze, unless it had a flag leaf. Wheat won’t be get old enough for that until late March/ April

Elbon rye available at coop in slaughter.
