SE Kentucky has a growing herd of elk and some of them have migrated over here to my part of Virginia. There is a pretty good debate going on right now as to whether we should re-establish elk or resist their reintroduction to their once native, eastern habitat. I can see both sides of the argument, and I still haven't made up my mind definitively. If yall had a choice of having elk would you be in favor of the restocking? Link to a local newspaper article about the elk here: LINK

It really isn't reintroducing an old species to it's native land. The Eastern Elk is extinct, which is the species that once populated the eastern US.

Those against it say the elk will damage crops, pastures, orchards, fences, and be a danger to vehicles. Those in favor say these arguments are minimal and are not that big of a deal. They claim it will increase tourism and out of state hunters with their money. I know the deer population here is huge and the deer do cause orchard, crop, and vehicle damage. I have no experience in dealing with elk, though. I've been told that a herd of elk will eat a hayfield down to nothing in no time flat. But, I really don't know. And for it's worth, game and fish department has restocked mountain lions here and they ARE reproducing and spreading. Elk are some of a mountain lion's preferred prey?

We need to reestablish them in Louisiana. Nothing like a good Elk hunt down in Pass a Loutre.

I think it would be pretty damn cool to have elk outside of the rocky mountain region...

honestly, I think elk would crowd out some of the whitetails, so I don't think the damages in the areas that you mention would increase or decrease much at all due to elk...

Elk are much more destructive to fences. If there is a green field, they will cause a great deal of damage to the fences around it. They will also push through fences to get to hay. Round bales out in a field would get devastated.

we did it up here in exchange for grouse years ago, now we got hardly any elk or grouse

Scott County may be different, but if it is anything like Tazewell County, they don't stand a chance because of poaching.

Sad to say, BF... but we just can't have nice things anymore

The elk are here in Scott County right now, but not in great numbers, only the isolated cow or two. Had one behind the house here on the mountain and another was tranquilized near Natural Tunnel State Park last fall and relocated back to Kentucky. Did you get the e-mail I sent ya this evening?

I'm all for it.

So there is a push to reintroduce a species into the wild that will allow them to flourish which will then allow them to be hunted which will then bring in tons of revenue and there are actually people opposed to that? As a hunter, it would be incredible to bring elk back to the east coast. Ive been planning a Rocky Mountain archery hunt now for the last month or so and Im ecstatic to hunt game in the mountains being a south Louisiana conass and all, but it would be sweet to have options. I cant believe there are people opposed to it. Of all the things that would stand in the way of elk population floursihing, you wouldnt think it would be a bunch of ignorant assholes with an ink pen.

My FIL is a MO DNR agent and they decided to reintroduce elk there too. He was against it, and says the damage to fences and cars has already been significant. One back road late night fatality due to a 1500 lb animal standing in the middle of a 55 mph hwy. is to much in his opinion.

I don't see how one accident is justification not to reintroduce them

If that was the case then why have whitetails?

Although i get your point, i dont see how they are any more of a threat than deer are. Should we start elimanting every species that wonders across the road because humans hit them in vehicles? And where is this 1500 elk you speak of?

Just move the elk crossing signs to less populated areas

They are more dangerous because elk are much larger than deer. I was wrong and was off by a couple hundred lbs. But show me a virgina deer that tops 300.

"A large bull elk can weigh up to 1,200 pounds but average from 600 to 800 pounds and an adult cow will range from 450 to 600 pounds. They are the second largest animal in the deer family with the moose being the largest."

And since no state I know of maintains open range laws, large animals are already restricted.
