That’s what I was driving at. A weapon with a magazine is easy enough to load and get a round chambered. Just wondering what people are doing with shotguns.

Just know a gun won't save you if you don't know how to use it.
Pistol shotgun or rifle, it's not about the gun, it's about who's using it man.
Personally I have a .45 for home protection, I like the idea of turning a corner with no barrel exposed and I don't want excess pellets flying around the house but honestly it doesn't matter. Just be competent with what you have

Prolly a dumb question, but do you keep a shotgun in the home loaded so it is ready to go? Or is the idea to have the shells handy with the gun and try to load as many as you can when you know there is a threat?
Shotguns make horrible clubs .... which is all they are if they're not loaded. I've always kept a couple easily accessible for my purposes and out of kids' and grandkids' reach .... loaded.
I'm 6'3" so I have a 12 gauge 500 in a rack of two bicycle hooks screwed into the header above the inside of my master bedroom closet.
I have another 500, a 20 gauge for my wife, on magnets behind my headboard.
They're both loaded, one in the pipe with tubes maxed out. I'm not sure, at my age, that I'll wake up in a hurry unless one of the alarms go off.
That's one thing that should be stressed ... multiple layers of early warning systems. In our case that includes motion sensors around a 3 acre perimeter, 24 cameras, 3 GSDs, three layers of monitored alarm systems plus exterior pressure swiches set at 150 pds when armed ... plus some other stuff. I didn't worry about it when I was a younger man but these days, when I do sleep ... it's usually a pretty deep sleep.
Anyways, as a young man, the movie In Cold Blood affected me ... so as I've grown older and wealthier I layered things in an effort to give me time to get to a shotgun.
That's what it's all about. Most bad outcomes are from not having enough time. Not being situationally aware and prepared.
Iffy times are coming. Some really bad people have been let into the country. Home invasions are up by double digits already and it's only going to get worse on a national scale.
Shotguns are the way to go for home defense ... loaded, ready to go. Also, good ear protection ... and mount a light on your shotgun. There are some great videos on YouTube all about it ... and Rumble.

I'm not comfortable having a loaded gun that isn't on my hip or locked up with kids around.
The gunnel of my boat is 5 feet off the ground and a 2.5 year old kid figured out how to get it in on his own the other day. They are crafty, and for me the risk of a kid getting their hands on a loaded gun scares me more than someone breaking in. A quick access long gun safe like they make for pistols would be really cool.

no, but I have ammo right there and I can load that bitch in a a few seconds. My 45 is, however, loaded
If I ever need a gun to defend my home I've fricked up somehow

Everything that isn't in my gun safe is Condition 1.
