Immunity to venom

It would be very interesting, to me, to know just WHY a king snake is immune to other snakes' venom. Seems like there would/could be a very practical application there to reproduce anti-venom for snake bite victims? Perhaps it already exists. Is current anti-venom based on another reptile's natural immunity? Any of you OB docs got any info on this? TIA

I don't doubt the reputation of a king snake but I'd have a hard time believing they'd mess with a King Cobra

Also when they eat the snake whole. The venom is in their stomach and a full dose of it.

The King Snake. America's Pet Snake That Eats Venomous Snakes!

quote:

One of the points that I'm trying to make clear here is that for every venomous snake there is a King Snake that looks damned similar to it, but is harmless. King Snakes are always evolved in such a manner that they are IMMUNE to the venom of the venomous snakes in their regions. A King Snake, as stated before here, is THE KING Snake in it's region, and it proves that by EATING the venomous snakes in it's region when and if the occasion arises.

Interesting article, Wick. Thanks! Still wondering about the how and why of king snake immunity, though...

I'm pretty sure antivenom is produced through milking a venomous snake, injecting that into a horse, and then collecting the horse's antibodies to make it.

This article talks about the oppossum's natural immunity to poisons, and possible applications for humans. Who would've thought those little bastards were good for something?

As wickowick's link pointed out, I don't think a kingsnake would be immune to a King Cobras since their they're not native to the same regions.

Now that's interesting. No wonder possums get run over. Snakes can't kill em.

Au contraire, you have plenty of time when they're dead. I find the deader the snake the more cooperative he is.

Sorry but I'm an idiot when it comes to anything concerning snakes. I've always been scared of them. Today while looking for something in my truck, neighbor comes tell me there is a snake roughly 4' long under my wife's car. He said it is a speckled king snake. I jumped in the bed of the truck like a bitch. After a while, I didn't see anything and went inside. Is there anything I should do or shouldn't do? I'm petrified of snakes but my biggest concern is the kids next door who always playing in the yard. My house is off the ground so I'm assuming its under the house somewhere or b/c they were playing in the yard shorty after, maybe they scared it off.

If it's that, it won't hurt the kids. (Ok, maybe if they pick it up, it might bite them, but they're pretty harmless unless you're another snake.)

Those kids are safer with that snake around...

Enjoy having a snake/rodent eating machine at your house.

Just google speckled king snake. They are really easy to ID. No other snake around south La looks like them that I know of, or no venoumous ones.
