No its the popularity of trophy hunting. Everyone thinks their property has the potential to produce what they see on tv. I hunt on a lease that typically lets anything less than a six point walk but we are lucky if we take 2-3 trophy bucks a year.

Thats why I don't like the words Trophy Hunting, The killing of mature deer should be the goal.

And a trophy class animal is what your area of the world can produce... I wouldn't expect south la to have the same type of throphy buck iowa would have... but that doesn't mean a 130-140-150 class mature bucks don't roam the swamps of la.

But you will have a hard time seeing a deer like that when the first deer you see gets shot at.

What makes your personal goal the correct goal which everybody should pursue?

Because it benefits all the hunters and the herd.

If you feel the killing of every young buck that walks out in front of a member is the right thing to do then go for it, it makes no difference to me.

Have fun and enjoy never seeing good deer...or never seeing mutliple bucks in a hunt or mulitple deer for that matter. Its all a personal choice and as long as you do it legal I could care less.

A "cull buck" shot on our lease.

This is because the buck is probably more than 3 1/2 yrs old has no Brow tines and only managed to produced 6 pts.

Right?

Is that the norm or getting nit-picky?

I'm sure he'd have brows next year

ETA: I'd have blasted him last year

Its the norm...I don't have all the scientific data like some on this board but if they don't have brow tines after the 2nd set of horns they never will...

Now if they lose them in fight or rubbing on trees then yes they will grow back the next season.

But there is a good chance that deer has been seen on camera and has not had any brows for a while.

Edit: good thing about 6 pts like that is they make for a great set of rattling horns. don't have the brow tines hitting your fingers or knuckles while trying to rattle them.

I don't think anyone ever said genocide on the deer is the right thing.

What I'm saying is, your way of hunting is right in your mind, but it doesn't make it the absolute right thing.

Lots of people just hunt for meat and couldn't care less about horns, you just have to find a club that shares your views

last 2 weeks of the season he dead, but up until then I don't shoot anything under a 6 point. I hunt on family acreage but you don't know how frustrating it is to let one walk only to hear a gun go off in that direction a few minutes later.

My view used to be, if one percent of my deer are trophy bucks I need to hurry up and kill 100 deer and one of them will be a trophy. But I ain't like that anymore.

What wrong shooting that deer? Hine quarter looks about a 14" spreed. Maybe it was the guys first deer for the year and he needed or wanted some fresh meat.

We've got a family lease (450 acres) and we've been trying to find the happy medium. It's not and never will be a Trophy lease, therefore we have requirements for a somewhat mature buck. If we waited for a 4yr old to walk by we'd have to take the next 2 years off first.
