OP, first off, you took a inshore boat offshore. Sure, you boat could handle small seas, BUT, it is NOT equip for offshore fishing.
A good boat that is equip for offshore fishing has redundant equipment.
Twin fuel systems
Twin engines
Twin everything, like bilge pumps.
That includes VHF radios
Compasses and knowing how to use them
Charts
First aid kit
One needs to study there charts. Just by knowing oil rigs in your area, that will help you know were you are at all times. Cell phones can help you out there too. Some of the rigs have repeater towers on them.
One thing that you did right was told someone your float plan. It is always good to let the mariner know of your float plan too! More so of your ETA's.
Oh, people just throw away expired flairs. Keep them. They really don't go bad if you keep them dry. One never knows how many one will need if shite hits the fan.
Glad you and your wife are safe. The gulf is no place to learn if one is not prepared for it in the first place. To many life's have been lost out there due to NOT being prepared in the first place.

I haven't dropped it off (200 Merc) yet. I'm getting everything worked on at one time. Got my Marine Radio ordered. Got a SailMaster 4 hp kicker. I'm not sure if I'm going to carry an extra can or have my kicker running from my big fuel tank. Leaning towards big tank. I really don't want to take up deck space. I'll up date. It's going to be something easy with my big motor. Nothing locked up & no signs of any parts failing.

Why did I get downvoted?
It's a serious question.

I figured you were running a Toby. You need to buy a Yamaha before the other things or you will be testing their effectiveness sooner rather than later.
