I’ve never used one while deer hunting, does the scent not bother the deer or do you have an unscented cartridge?

God bless the man who invented the thermocell. It’s as important as remembering toilet paper on a hunt. Years back I was sitting on my in laws back porch on evening and my FIL comes out with a bug light and Off at sunset. We fought mosquitos for 5 minutes before I went to the truck and got my thermocell. He bought 3 the next day!

I’ve never had an issue with deer noticing it while deer hunting.

I laughed at the guy that introduced me to Thermacells a couple of decades ago. I was on the phone with Allegra (daughter of the owner) the next day. Those things were life changing for us outdoor people.

I don't care if they make my Testicles glow! Early season, some of the bottom areas i hunt are so thick with mosquitos it looks like the inside of the clear box the guy sticks his arm in on the old OFF commercials. These things really clear them out. it is miserable without them.

On multiple occasions i've had deer (mature and young of both sexes) within 15ft of my ground blind downwind and it didn't phase them. same when hunting from a ladder stand as well. i'm sure they've spooked the occasional deer, but i've never seen it.

Nitecore

I was really interested, until I started looking at the reviews. Pretty general consensus they don't get hot enough to do any good. What's your experience?

Great for while hunting but for camping I would spray camp area with permethrin.

What do you spray, your tent, ground, trees?

I treat my clothes with it - seems like it would be costly to cover campsite and curious about the effectiveness spraying outdoors but if it is, I’d definitely use it for that.

It takes a second to heat up. But I can’t tell the difference between it and the thermacell. I’ll bust both of them out and see if I feel like one is better.

The pad that came in the nite core was like a light blue and didn’t seem as pungent as the replacement pads. I don’t know if maybe the one that comes in it isn’t as strong or something.

Used one yesterday and had three does at my stand. Have used one for years and they do not bother deer. I generally use the “fresh earth” scented pads but also the unscented ones.

I have a thermocell and hardly ever use it.
Instead I bought the round Skeeter coils , broke them in 2 inch pieces , got an alligator clip with a short piece of bent wire and burn that when needed.
Easily half the cost , no Fuel or Pads to run out and starts working Right now.
Plus you can hang it downwind real easy.

All I'm saying is, don't use it when you don't have to.

I find mosquitoes are mostly down near the ground. After I climb up in a tree, if there are still mosquitoes buzzing around, I will light up the thermocell.

But usually after 5 minutes, they are gone and I turn off the thermocell. Usually I don't have any more mosquitoes around the rest of the day.

We must hunt in different terrain. When I’m hunting by the house, I usually find out my butane ran out when the mosquitos show back up.

When I hunt in Mississippi, I rarely even need my thermocell.

I've never had deer worry about a thermacell. doesn't seem to be a smell they care about. but, more importantly if they can smell the thermacell then they can smell me, and that's a much bigger problem.

They have a woods/earth scent that I have not seen the deer react to.

Deer don't notice it. I've had deer within feet of me under my stand with it on that never knew I was there.

Running a little experiment today. I don’t have an IR thermometer, just like a digital meat thermometer. Using that, after about 10 minutes the plate on the thermacell is about 220F and the Nitecore is at 170F. Both are smoking but the thermacell seems to be more consistent. The Nitecore seems more intermittent.

After 30 minutes, the thermacell is at 255 and really smoking. Nitecore is still just an ocassional puff but it’s now at 190. The Nitecore when you cut it on with 100 percent battery it says 12 hours indoor and 6 for outdoor. But it immediately goes to 5 and it’s now at 4 hours for outdoor. I’m leaving it on outdoor to see when it dies to get battery life. I’m unsure how much the smoke matters, once warm they both kind of smell at similar strength.

After an hour the thermacell is 265 and the Nitecore is 220. The thermacell is smoking like crazy and I now notice no smoke from the Nitecore. Maybe those pads aren’t supposed to smoke?

2 hours in thermacell is 260 and Nitecore is 220 the thermacell pad is pretty crispy. It’s been on there since last season, I’ve never paid attention to know if that normally happens. Nitecore battery meter has said 4 hours basically since it got hot.

4 hours in the Nitecore is 205 and the thermacell is 270. The pad is well done on the thermacell. I want to put in another pad and try again later to see if this happens. The Nitecore says 2 hours left on the meter now.

6 hours in, the thermacell is still 270 and the Nitecore is now about 190 still has the smell and the pad looks a little lighter but not crazy. I’ll share a pic when it dies. I cut the thermacell off and the pad is roasted and discolored. I’ll update again when the Nitecore dies.

It ran well to more than 7 hours, I checked the temp and it was right around 170, I felt like it was losing juice but still smelly. Battery showed 9% left, I placed them on the battery station and it showed them at 3 volts which is pretty heavily discharged. The pad isn’t too washed out but definitely not as blue as when it started.
