Thermion 2 XP50.

Might as well save another 4k for a hand held unit

Budget is important. I have a Pulsar Trail XP50 that I love.

I have a pulsar trail 2 XQ50LRF.
Nvision has the best 640 12micron scope out right now but it's 10k. The pulsar thermion 2 and trail 2 are the runners up.

I have the XQ (384 res - 17 micron) due to the shooting distances that I work at. The 640 17micron XP units have a great picture at lower base mags for closer hunting. The XQ (384) has a better image than the XP (640) at 2x zoom and greater which is why I went with the XQ.I never shoot at 2-2.9x zoom.

The trail series offers a laser range finder that's not on the Thermions which isn't a big deal if you are feeder hunting. The LRF is a necessity when stalking in open fields

You won't get much of a thermal and gun for $4000. You need that for just the thermal for a reliable and clear product.

I have used a handful of the new thermals in the $3000-$10,000 range. Spend every cent on a good thermal if you will take this serious.

First hand experience with the AMG rattler 640res 12 micron and it was junk. Returned it next day

This is my YT with the trail 2 videos. this is what $4300 thermal will give you Thermal hog killing

Anyone have experience with the Bering optics Super Hogster? Been looking at these pretty hard and seem to get very good reviews.

I’m still trying to figure mine out with all the options.

it may be a personal opinion but I don't like the image it gives off. It uses the same thermal core as Iray. Iray is junk.

Also I don't like the 384 res screen with the 12 micron sensor. They "carved out" a 384 resolution image from the 640 unit and upped the base magnification to refine the image. I don't like that idea. My 384 17 micron scope looks at lot better IMO - more realistic looking

this is a hog I shot sunday night in the rain - shitty thermal conditions.
165yds is the first and 200 yds is the last

I never used a thermion but my hunting buddy had an XG 50. it's the same features as mine but different buttons. That thermion 2 is crisp looking for sure. I wish pulsar could better integrate the 12micron sensor with the 640 units. it would give Nvision some competition

What rifle are you using? I have a 300blk with a suppressor I want to use for hogs but I’m starting to think it wouldn’t reach the potential of a good thermal since my range would be limited.

I'm using a .300blk 10" barrel. zeroed at 100yds I have 7" drop at 200 yds. so it does have its limitations for my style hunting (crop fields)
Tomorrow my 6.5 Grendel will be complete and I'll be able to more comfortably reach out to 200-300yds.
150yds and under its great. I've killed many many hogs with it.

ETA: to see and effectively shoot past 200yds you need a quality thermal.

Would LOVE to get into Thermal hunting but unlikely bc (insert excuse)

Reality, for me, is I'll get far more use from a monocular type thermal that I can frick around at the house/camp/hunts w/ for shits n giggles etc.

Can anyone recommend best monocular for ^? Not trying to spend $3-4k on novelty item but also don't want to waste $. Where is the point of diminishing returns?

If you get a rifle scope with a nice quick release mount it can pull double duty as a monocular to mess around with.

Agree and have given this some thought, however the reality (for me) is that usage hours are likely to be split 98% f'ing off and 2% hunting. If/when that changes i'd be inclined to drop $4-$5k on the right scope.

I have the Hogster 35. It's been a great thermal for the money. If you look up late night vision show on youtube, they give a lot of detailed reviews of thermals. My only complaint on the hogster is the CR123 batteries.
