After this next tournament in a couple weeks I plan to start fishing that area again.

What's y'all opinion of Nucanoe frontier 12? I swung by pack n paddle today and checked out their stock. Hobies are ridiculously nice but no way I can justify dropping 4k right now. The frontier looks big and stable and is only $1400.

Why are the pelicans at academy so cheap? What's the catch?

Too heavy and slow; tracks poorly. If going SOT try Native Manta Ray 14', WS Tarpon 14, Jackson Coosa. 12' too short for a big guy.

Aight. I'm checking them out now. Is that the best kayak forum?

What is the oldest model hobie I'd want to buy?

I can't believe anyone still considers Hobie. Even the new reverse feature, they are behind.

I have a 2014 outback. Much older than that may have seen some serious wear. But the design was the same for several years before that model

I can stand easily, pedaling is awesome, lots of room.

You have to reach down and switch something instead of simply pedaling backwards.

True, but the push system of the Mirage Drive is much easier than the bicycle motion.

Gonna have to disagree with this. All of it. 12' is not too short for a big guy. Totally dependent on each kayak. The nucanoes are extremely stable. It would be no problem for a big guy. Tracking will suffer in a wider boat, but I think the stability makes up for it unless you're routinely making long trips.

The manta ray and tarpon he mentioned are fine kayaks but they're outdated and not ones you can realistically stand in.

The Jackson coosa is only 11'2" (which is fine) but it's a hull specifically designed for moving water. If you don't nearly exclusively river fish, I wouldn't look at the coosa. The coosa HD or fd on the other hand are both excellent at handling most situations. My personal favorite in that class of boat is the old town predator mx. Super stable and does well on almost all types of water. It's not a long distance boat but it tracks well and has decent speed. Open floor plan is great too.

My son is turning 10 this month and after our first canoe trip in June, he wants a kayak for his birthday. I don't want to break the bank as this will be his first and is likely to get beat to hell and back but I also don't want to sort by price and buy the cheapest out there.

What are my best options for cost vs stability and one to learn in? I have no experience but if he takes to it, I'm going to get one for me too.

ETA: he'll primarily be using it in a large pond or lakes. No big river trips for this one.

What are you looking to spend? Do you want him to be able to stand?

Jackson Kayaks make a boat specifically designed for kids: Jackson Skipper. Jackson also makes a small, 10' angler kayak that is designed for smaller individuals and is a more streamlined angling kayak at a lower price point than most of their more advanced kayaks: Jackson Cruise Angler 10.

Another kayak in that same size range for a little cheaper is the Perception Pescador Pro 10.

If you're not sold on spending $700+, then look at kayaks like the Pelican Enforcer 120x Angler. It should run around $550 and has a little better seat than most of the cheaper kayaks.

As a word of caution, I would stay away from the BPS Ascend 10' sit-on-top kayaks. They have major stability issues. I think they may have recently redesigned the hull but I would just stay away until there are enough reviews out to come to a consensus on it.

I wouldn't go bigger than 12' on a kayak for a 10 year old and even with the 12' kayaks I would be very conscious of the weight of the kayak. Some 12' kayaks may be easier for him to control than a poorly designed 10' kayak, but a heavy, wide 12' kayak will be difficult for him to maneuver.

Ordered a new Railblaza product today that is gonna fix a paddle stow issue on my KC. I have the yakattack rotogrip paddle holders but it doesn't really work because the seat is in the way of the paddle blade
