The ability to pedal forward and backward while drifting a bank is the most rewarding. I dont feel like mine is fast. My 10' slayer is 55 lbs without the seat. And I top it on the camper top on the tacoma. Sometimes I put it in the bed and top the ultimate which is definitely lighter but 2 feet longer.

You have the Native Slayer 10 foot with pedal capacity?

At least to me, the ability to go hands free and spend more time fishing, get to the spot faster, and reverse (especially if you're fishing structure)
I’m sure some of the other fellows have already discussed it but it really just depends on where you plan on fishing imo
Lakes/ponds or inshore?
Or just looking to get out on the water and for how long is important also
Of course a paddle rig can get you just about anywhere ya want to go, but if you’re fishing inshore and get into some current, it can get miserable real quick, hell even with pedals I’ve been in some tides where it didn’t feel like I was moving
Really just boils down to your budget and where are you going
Also you can only rooftop load?

First things first, you are the beer drinking champion of the world
I'll be fishing inshore/nearshore on the MS Coast. I'd hit up the nearshore artificial reefs, structure around harbors, bridges, and marshes.
In terms of time on the water, I'm not the type to sit around and fish forever when I'm not catching anything. The ability to get out there fast is very important to me. I want as little fuss as possible. That's why I'm interested in the ultralites. Toss it on the rack, grab the rod and tackle bag and an ice chest, roll to the spot, and get to paddling.
Budget isn't too much of an option. My wife wants me to get something safe. I don't want to spend too much though. Definitely no more than $2500 - $3000.
I can only rooftop load, yes. I have an SUV and I am not getting a trailer.

Beer is fricking delicious!
Sounds like you have a mixed bag of fishing spots, I would lean heavily on something with pedals if you even remotely enjoy it you’re gonna wanna em
might as well just bite the bullet out the gate
And with that kind of budget you’ll find a nice used rig regardless of the brand
Do you live in gulfcoast MS or just fish over there I was gonna say you can borrow my rig if an hr or 2 around Laffy

I live on the Coast but thanks for the offer.

Stop by Everything Kayak right by the Gulfport outlet mall. They have a lot of models in stock you can check out and they have a pool in their shop to see how it feels on the water.

Disclaimer: very new to fishing, but a lifelong paddler. I also have to rooftop load (solo) almost exclusively.
I have a Crescent Ultralite - let me know if any questions or want to try it out (Baton Rouge area). Great performance relative to a 10' boat, and very easy to car top and set up - the seat is only piece to add/remove. It is also a good loaner/second boat, if/when you decide to upgrade to a pedal.
As a longtime paddler/kayak camper, I really didn't consider a pedal drive at all when buying my main sit on top fishing kayak - Jackson Kayak Yupik. I wanted something stable (I can walk bow to stern) that I could rig up differently, depending on trips. As I fish more, I really wish I had put more thought into the pedal drive - just more efficient with your time on water. Your going to remove the pedal with all other components when rooftopping anyway, so its just one additional piece to attach when setting off.
I will be upgrading the 12' to a pedal - looks like there are several options in your price range with hull weights 60-70 pounds. I'd recommend deciding on the kayak fishing you want to do first (stand/sit, storage options) and then worry about rooftopping - you can always get a Yakima showboat or something similar.
I would also look hard at the Crescent LiteTackle if you decide on paddle or are a relatively larger man - the extra stability/storage will probably come in handy nearshore, without too much added hull weight.

Was able to sneak off for a couple hrs yesterday and hunt some pre storm reds at PAC, was with no doubt my best day site fishing
Saw at least 30 reds in less than a 1’ of water through out the morning
Had a limit in less than an hr and played catch n release until my arm was sore
Fantastic day

That’s Dre’s rig, was the 2nd trip with it
Was impressed with how well it actually responded with going sideways or even doing a 180 not sure I drop that kind of coin but to each his own

12 or 14? We went to Hog Island and caught some nice flounder. We fished the canal side.

That ain’t bad. Most people I talked to yesterday struggled. We found some trout off the ship channel. It’s about to get right in Prien

Thanks to everyone for all the advice.

Yeah, I'm ready for Prien to turn on.

For paddle, I’m considering:
- NuCanoe Flint
- Jackson Coosa
Anyone have these yaks?
I’m still looking at pedal kayaks.

Most have pedals here. Hobie Outback checking in.

Of those, I'd rather have the Flint.
