Outstanding. I know you and your pops will cherish this trip forever.

What rod are you throwing with that Nautilus?

yeah man. I owe my passion for fishing and hunting to my dad. It's hard to find things that I can show him, instead of things that he's shown me. He hooked up with a bone with a guide poon fishing in the Keys, but he's never landed a bone, much less landed one on a DIY trip. It took a little bit of convincing to get him to buy into the idea of coming on this trip with me without a guide, so it was really an awesome feeling to get him on his first fish. eta: plus, like I said earlier, the wind has been brutal. He was pretty discouraged after the first day, so it was awesome to see it come together for him and feel like I had a part in that.

That rod is a Meridian 8wt. I have my other reel uplined with 9wt and considered throwing it today with the wind, but the fish have been super spooky so I've been forcing 8wt and 12ft leaders into this bullshite and cutting/retying because of wind knots every hour .

Starting to plan a trip to Montana next summer. Group of 5-6 guys late June. Unguided only majority of time spent wading unless we can rent rafts for a day.

We have done similar trips to WYstone, Ennis, and Twin and had a blast. Trying to decide if we return to one of those or go for new water up around Missoula. Would we be happy on a cabin on Clark Fork or Rock Creek up there compared to say the Madison or Big Hole?

This is on my to-do list. Is that known to be a good time to go?

-----

On the carp fishing... would you explain what all you're looking for in finding common carp? I found those grass carp on Mountain Island Lake but really want the golden ghost. I have spent a lot of time on Wylie just cruising the bank with my trolling motor over the past few months and can't seem to find any with any consistency. I've read that they're in there - wondering if the lake is too developed for good habitat.

Any good forums you can recommend for NC/SC? Maybe others in this area can help

Completely new to fly fishing, can anyone recommend a good quality rod, reel, and line? It would primarily be used for inshore saltwater fishing. I'm not looking for a cheap entry level setup, I want to buy a good quality setup to start with that I will be happy with for years to come. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you might be in the market for an 8 wt

There is some good discussion on page 11 I think where JTS asked the exact same question. Also check page 28 and go from there too.

Line choices are s many. I know blue moons really likes the Bermuda Triangle line by wulff for saltwater fishing.

Not trying to avoid your question but I think there's some valuable info in there for someone willing to read through 5-10 pages. If you haven't found your answer on what guys here recommend or want clarification please ask

I've fished the Clark Fork and Rock Creek. Both are awesome. They also get way less pressure. Well, that might not be true, but if you're willing to hike.. you can get into areas that get a lot less pressure.

Really beautiful area.

Fine places to start.

BTW, Lamson Litespeed reels are $100-150 off right now at mrfc.com. I wish I was in the market for a new reel b/c those are some incredible reels.

If anyone is in the market for a decent rod on the cheap, Allen just sent an e-mail saying they are offering the Volant at 50% off today using the promo code V50 at checkout. That would make it about $150 for the rod which is a steal IMO. My first rod was a Volant and I liked it a lot.

I'd go with the BVK. I have both the Axiom in 10wt and the BVK in 8wt, and I've thrown an 8wt Axiom. It's a broomstick. Good for lifting power, but not a lot in the way of feel. The BVK sacrifices lifting power, but it has a ton of feel for a cheaper rod. IMO it's just as good as a lot of $800+ rods.

I look for flats in the backs of creek channels or areas where there is alot of shallow bank. You will notice plumes of mud and bubbles when a common is feeding on the bottom. If you locate that you can usually figure out what way the fish is facing and get a fly in front of it. Unless the water is super dirty or too deep you should be able to see the fish working.

Should look something like this in dirty water

and this in clean water

I can't help you with those two lakes as I have never been on them but I do know there is a guide who works the Catawba chain very successfully so they are there.

I'm looking for a quality 10 wt reel under $250-$300.
Do you have any experience with the larger litespeeds?

I have a TFO Pro Series II 8 wt with very little use (yard casting) if interested.
It's a slower action rod, I think much easier to cast for a beginner.
Have three 8 wts and don't need that many

Email: tdstewie@gmail.com if interested

My buddy has one and loves it. Lifetime warranty with a company that, ime, has excellent customer service.

I have 2 Lamson reels. My 8wt reel, the Konic 2 3.5, is same design and sealed conical drag as the litespeed but it is heavier (read, cheaper). The drag has been smooth as silk
