I'm sure you will find places of your own, but put diamond lake outside of boulder on your list of places to check out.

Good afternoon gents,
I will be headed to Maui in 3 weeks for my honeymoon and was going to take my fly rod and do a little surf fishing if I have some free time. Unfortunately all I have is a 5wt. Am I completely outgunned or are there some small tropical fish I would be able to catch? Any advice would be appreciated!

Okay cool. I just moved here so not too familiar with the area. Going to try the Blue River in Silverthorne for the easy access. The little lady wants to give it a try so I figured it'd be easy to get to and we can grab some lunch or something while we're there.

What advantage do the boots provide over the boots that are attached to my duck hunting waders?
Just to add to what Shark said, the boots give you a lot more stability.

Awesome pic, why fly did you catch 'em on?
Casting question, i picked up a TFO Pro Series II 8 Wt the other day and while it's a slower action/heavier rod, I seem to get more out of that rod and cast further and more accurate than my Recon (faster action - tip flex).
I can feel the Recon has more power and capability but I can't seem to harness that power and accuracy.
I can feel the TFO Pro load pretty easily but having a harder time feeling the Recon load properly.
Any tips?

Did you just recently start fly fishing? I know nothing of either of those two rods, but fast action rods are much less forgiving than medium action rods. Any mistake in your casting stroke will be amplified with a fast action rod.

What happens to your loops when you start casting for distance? Are they falling flat or landing in a tangled mess on the water?
The biggest mistake people make when trying to cast a fly rod for distance is they try too hard on both the haul and the forward cast.
Do less. Pick a distance you can cast to with tight loops and hit consistently. Make minor line speed adjustments with your haul and see if that will give you a few extra feet without collapsing your loop. The only way to get better is to practice but things start to fall apart when you try to force the line out with the rod. Being forceful or making power casts comes much much later in your casting evolution. You must first crawl before you can walk

Has anyone been to SC flood tide fishing? I think I'm going to go next summer.

When I cast for distance with the REcon, I get (what I feel and see) are tight back cast but a loss of line speed on the final front cast. The line shoots out but only gets 40-50ft and the loop is a tangled mess. However, when it hits water, line is still fly out of the rod.
There is a break down some where.
With the slower TFO, I don't feel I need to power it because I can feel the line through out the cast and it shoots out 60-70 feet with power and ease.
Again, you can feel the power of the faster Recon in the cast but it's like it falls flat on its face.
And as a general statement, I know it's the user and not the rod. The rod has the capability but I'm not exercising it properly.

You're losing line speed on your forward cast somehow. I'm willing to bet you're trying to double haul and not keeping your hands together. When that happens you end up moving the rod back and forth over the line. The end result is the rod doesn't have time to load and your fly line lands in a pile out on the water.

Ehh, very active for roughly 4 years or so...I wouldn't say new to the game but not seasoned.
What's the board's feeling on over lining. I've thought about over lining the recon 9 wt line on 8 wt rod to help get a better feel.
I'm just looking to accurately cast 50-70 ft in windy conditions.
I only get accurate cast with the recon at 40 consistently in good winds.

Depends entirely on the type of line and the rod you're casting. A Recon is already fairly moderate and with most 8wt WFF lines running a little heavy anyway it can make over lining a tricky thing.

Drag our your measuring tape. You have 9 feet of rod, three feet of arm, and 9 feet of leader. With 35 feet of fly line out you're landing the fly 55-60 from where you're standing.
Without seeing your cast, its impossible to give insight. I have seen A LOT of people cast, and what you're describing is 99 times out of 100 a line speed issue. Usually from someone messing up the double haul or pushing too hard on their forward cast.

I'd like to.
Down here in Jacksonville and St. Augustine area we get some of the same type deal. It is really fun watching those fish work in that grass.
Summer of the Lagoon is almost over, water has been extremely shallow this past week and murkier than ever
It was fun while it lasted!

I certainly appreciate that.
I think you hit on something with my hands being too far apart on the double haul...damn impressive catch.
I'll owe you a beer for the help.

Read through every page last week, bought a Cabela's Wind River Combo and went once and had a blast. I obviously missed something along the way because while I was out there, I was thinking, "if I change my fly out a lot, I'll eventually get to the fly line." Then I googled it when I got back and came across something like this:
My question is, does the image show the proper setup and if so, what size tippet do I need? When I google tippets, I see people carry them on their vests and what not so I guess one could change them frequently??
If it helps, I have a 8'-6", 5 wt and will be fishing in Colorado. My reel came with backing, fly line, and a leader, if referencing the diagram.
Thanks for the help!

I think it's primarily a summer/late summer thing. I'm gonna try to go around this time next year.
