Allen is known for amazing customer service. I had a problem with my rod and I just gave them a call and I went by their place in Southlake, TX and they simply swapped it out right there for me no questions asked. Nice guys.

I use my 8 weight for all largemouth bass fishing and it is because of the size of the flies. Maybe I just suck but I find it difficult to cast some of those big bass flies even with an 8 weight. The weight of the fish isn't as much of a factor as the size of the flies being cast.
My 7wt bass rod is a much slower action than most of my other rods. I think that it helps tremendously on those big flies.

Fair enough.
I'll bow to the other guys on rod weight for LM bass- the only bass I encounter are smallies

Well I tried to order the Kraken 7-9wt last night but it's out of stock and I can't find it anywhere else. Emailed Allen to see about availability.

There is a FWX on microskiff for sale with backing and airflow 7wt line. $275

Same guy has a ccf 8 for 275 with a spare spool for 100 too.
Hey, Barf, what's your screen name on Microskiff?

Just one opinion here, those used Nautilus reels are a deal. I'd jump on one of those before buying a new Kraken.
Good luck with your search

The FWX? I'm concerned about it being too small and I've read some 50-50 reviews on it

I know there a lot of freshwater people that love the FWX. What I'd love about it is that it's so light, 4.1 oz.
I haven't had the chance to fish it but I have lawn cast a rod with the FWX.
The CCF is a pretty awsome reel too.
I can really speak to the quality of the reel and their customer support...both are the best.
I can't speak on the Allen reels but I know there are some on here that have them.
Also check out the Galvan T-8. For me I Was the torn between the Galvan t-8 vs. the nautilus CCF-X2. I bought the nautilus because a darn good deal came along.

Not good today. Amite river was nothing but headwater full of sticks and logs.
Managed about 2 bluegill and 3 goggle eye on fly. Still 2 weeks too early id say

I don't really fly fish but I make a lot of sac a lait (crappie) and bream jigs as well as bass jigs...
I'm using a vise that got me started but want to upgrade to a rotating type vise but at a reasonable cost...
any suggestions?...

Renzetti travel vise is what I have. I've had it for a long time (15+ yrs)
It's a great vise and a true rotary.

$170 and great reviews...
that could work...I say I don't fly fish but SIL does and he 's got me hooked back into it as I did it years ago...
next trip hopefully I can get some good footage of him taking his first red on fly...
It's kind of like when I switched from gun hunting to bow hunting and discovering the sport all over again...

To me, sight fishing with a fly rod is the bow hunting of fishing.

I have a Peak Rotary Vise and it is top-notch IMO.
Also had a fantastic weekend of fly fishing for bass. Landed about a 7 pounder using the following:
TFO Axiom 8 Weight
Allen Alpha III Reel
WF8F Floating Fly Line from Orvis
About a 13.5 lb floating leader, no tippet
1/0 Meat Whistle - Olive color, similar to the one below
Had about 3 bites that snapped my line immediately upon strike. That was on a 10lb test leader, so I immediately switched to 13.5lb leader and performed better and more careful strip sets and was able to stop losing flies at that point. If you can tie a slumpbuster fly, those work well on bass, and you could tie a meat whistle as well if you can tie that.

hell now I'm looking at the Regal lever vises...
not a true rotary but it does rotate...
and yes...I'll be looking at some fly rods...last one I had busted double hauling to reach where I just "knew" a big kentucky bass was holding...

Nice! Any pics of the fish? I was actually planing to tie a few of those next week, glad to know they work so well. I've had more than one knowledgeable person tell me 0x or bigger for largemouth, and after having the same experience as you on 2x I listened.

I've come close to buying a Regal but just to use for deer hair bass flies. The jaws are extremely strong. In the end I just stuck with my Renzetti.
And a true rotary makes tie a lot of flies a lot faster. Dubbing, chenille, etc goes on quick and you can see exactly where it I as well all down the shank.
