For some odd reason was looking at the monthly duck surveys for the coastal wma's and couldn't help but to notice how awful the counts were for this wma for the past few years. Feel like not too long ago it used to be pretty solid. Has habitat declined that much or has the flyway just shifted that much? I haven't personally been out there since maybe 2013, but at that time the habitat was solid, aside from the little bit of hyacinth. But that's a problem everywhere. Seems like hunting in that general is declining.

By the way it's interesting to see those surveys. I typically only look at the big one Larry Reynolds puts out. These are sorted by wma, the units within and species.

I haven't been back there in years but grew up near there.

30 years ago it wasn't uncommon to kill mallards and canvasbacks in the same hunt. Less than 10 years ago the Bass masters classic was won in Tank pond.

Now the bass population is almost non existent and the ducks are really reduced from what I hear. I haven't heard why or any theories...

Did the Davis pond project change that much with all of it?

As the duck flies, that is pretty close to Maurepas WMA and the decline of duck is great. The decline of Maurepas is due to lack a freshwater from anual Mississppi river flooding which is causing the swamp to die and salvania invasion which is choking out landing areas and food for ducks. I'm not sure is Salvador is dealing with the same issue.

I believe the flyway has changed. I have hunted close to 35 years and it seems every year the ducks don't come to our area as much more and more.

LINK

Goes back to 03 and the usual coasta wmas, like pass, Pac, white lake, etc. Can see November thru January flyover counts.

As others have said when you fly into nola and land from the west and make that north south loop, you do notice the flyway. Joyce, manchac/swamp, labranch/spillway, lake des allemands, salvador and then lafitte all in a line. All areas that are slipping a bit. But man Salvador looks "ducky." But some of these counts show literally zero ducks or a 45 at most. Heck the wma is like 30k acres!

Figured this would be a unique discussion.

ETA: Scroll down to coastal surveys on that link, the top ones are the overall counts that Larry post or emails out to his list. Looking at summaries for 73 to 03. Each month and year is a separate pdf. It looks like 97 and 98 were probably amazing years. North of 5.5 mill birds on some of those counts.

Salvinia and hyacinth block sunlight to the preferred submerged aquatics and even displace duckweed in the cypress/tupelo swamps. There is very little feed in this type of environment.

If I'm not mistaken, maurepas is getting some fresh water introduction pretty soon.

Davis pond/salvador has lots of freshwater and isnt producing. Makes you wonder how much good it would do for maurepas swamp?

As far as invasive aquatics blocking the good aquatics in Salvador, there is feed in there, not sure why the state doesn't spray in there. Guess with the constant flow of river water it's a battle. Similar problem at my lease.

problems facing salvador cataouche are very different than what is facing maurepas. but when ducks quit using a large area like that it is hard to get them back...

dramatic increase in boat traffic hurt salvador area.

restoring historical hydrology and water flows is always better.. although better may not be immediate. as salinity and water quality changes so do invertabrates and plants.. this change does not complete overnight.

every where there is a lot of salvinia ducks - leave...
