Just went to my pond behind my house. I had a blue wing drake swimming with my tame ducks. I live south of Opelousas.

With migrators in eclipse plumage, you could tell from a distance it was a drake how.......?

Been seeing a few here and there, SE la coastal marshes

Adult drake blue wing teal are typically the first to migrate, so with that said, probability is high that the duck seen was in fact a drake blue wing teal. Regardless of the "eclipse" plumage.

Yea actually dead serious and curious, did the bird have the crescent white face or what? Early migrating bluewings are still in summer (eclipse) plumage, so how exactly were you able to tell it was a drake? And yes, the front end of the migration is primarily drakes so it's a good chance it was a male regardless.

LINK

Nonetheless, hope the front brought you and everyone else more of them.

I have a flock of about 35 tame ducks on my pond. He was sitting on the edge in the grass. He flushed and landed about 20 feet away with the tame ducks. I could see the outline of his crescent plainly. As we kill about 250 teal in my blind each year, yes I can tell. Crescent was not white, was slightly lighter colored. No offense taken.

Roger that.

Hearing a lot of reports of "here today gone tomorrow" which isn't unusual for the early birds. Hope it's more "here" than otherwise for next Friday. Strange how you can blaze them out, then nada next day. Similarly for last couple of years I didn't put an eye on a teal day before opener, then had plenty shooting opening morning. Just gotta go!

Beat em up pretty good in the Anahuac marsh this weekend. Needed the distraction from dealing with my flooded house demo. Saw tons but with so much water they are really spread out.

Will post pics in the Shootout thread to get Team Hollywood on the board.
