You're like that guy on that Dr. Pepper commercial where the bear is paddling his canoe down river.

While we're all out hunting squirrels with shotguns...........you have a falcon catching them for you.

Hey man. I want to do this Wednesday. Where can I get hawk? You have one trained I can buy? My uncle has some land that I could use this on.

They eat bird seed?

Check out craigslist. That's where I get all my hawks.

Went out for a short hunt this afternoon. Short because my 8-year-old partner got something in her eye and just couldn't go on, although she did frolic back to the truck.

Awesome work as usual.

I checked Craigslist but all they had were Cooper's and I'm not dealing with all that. I heard a couple flying this morning and have some meat and my cast net ready for tomorrow. I'll be hawking real soon!

It sounds like you're on the right track. You should have no trouble.

I know they need to be a the right weight to hunt and come back, so how many kills will you usually allow in one hunt? You said she eats a bit of her kill so I'm assuming she will get full and not return if you hunt to long right?

Correct.

A lot depends on how fast the kills come. Like us, it takes them a while to feel full after eating. Two kills is pretty much always possible. Three sometimes (although I've rarely tried it myself). The most I've ever heard of with a single red tail was six squirrels.

1. Find a general or master level falconer to be your sponsor.

2. Build a mews (hawk house)- at least an 8x8x8' building meeting certain criteria, along with a "weathering yard" (roofed open pen) of the same dimensions. These must be inspected by the USFW along with some other basic equipment.

3. Pass a written exam.

4. Apprentice for two years under the falconer who agreed to sponsor you.

Teague, I had a small hawk land on a tree next to me in the deer stand this evening and I tried to get a picture to determine what species it was. Could it even be a falcon or something in MS?

Had a tan colored chest with a grey looking head and somewhat striped underside of tail. Only a foot tall sitting on a limb.

Seemed to have a pretty aerodynamic shape when it flew away. Thinking falcon if that's possible.

Sounds like a mature Cooper's hawk.

And today.

She snatched a big fox squirrel out of two different trees, but the big bastard managed to get loose from her both times. I think she had it by the arse-end each time.

Bad arse video there. Funny as hell seeing that tree rat running through the swamp then WHAM! From the looks of it the hawk sits in the top of the trees and you walk around and get critters moving around for the bird? Thanks so much for sharing. Also, please let me know when you are going again. I would love to witness this in person and show my son as well.
