Teaching a dog to track deer. Edit: added a video

So I just got a GSP and while it will more than likely be a family pet and a running companion, I would like to try and train him to track deer.
Any good books, kits, or tips?

Tracking Dogs for Finding Wounded Deer - John Jeanneney
Posted on 3/4/20 at 10:26 am to tke_swamprat
Find a local butcher who will save blood for you. Start off making short, straight, blood trails with a treat (I use hot dogs) at the end covered in blood. When the dog finds the treat you need to lose your shite like it is the most amazing thing you have ever seen. Do this 1-2 times a week but don’t do more than 2 trails a day. As the dog gets better use less blood, longer trails, more turns, etc.
Also, buy a bell that you can clip on the collar and only clip the bell on when it is time to work. Take it off as soon as the treat is found. You want the dog to associate that bell with tracking.
Good luck

Not necessarily. I have a dog who does both, and has done both in the same day. I do say, "go find the deer," when putting him on a deer track, which probably helps him differentiate between the work we're doing.
A dog also learn to differentiate scent between a deer that has been shot and one that hasn't, so he shouldn't just jet on smelling a deer. Imagine shooting a deer in a plot where 5 deer were standing. A trained dog finds the track of the one that has been shot and doesn't just aimlessly hunt the others that ran off.

Almost word for word how I trained my Boykin to track. Especially the parts about praising like crazy when he finds it, and using a bell only when tracking

Same here. My chocolate does both and has done so within an hour. One thing I’ve always done to differentiate is having him wear a harness with a bell to track, and a vest to duck hunt. Mine knows what he’s going after even I bring out certain gear. I love watching a good duck dog work, but i think I like tracking even more.

My dog hunts birds, retrieves ducks and trails game. He isn't trained to trail deer, he's trained to trail a scent and he tracks what you want him to track. We have a routine, I put a certain harness on him, have certain commands, he's not confused and does well. Trailing game is a big deal to me because I have a very difficult time seeing blood on green or brown. If I didn't have my dog, I wouldn't be able to find a deer that ran a short distance easily.
If you're interested, I had Randy Devall train my dog to track.

Find a beagler with a problem dog that chases deer instead of rabbit. Offer to take the problem off his hands.

Actually I know the butcher I use to process my deer meat. Problem now would be to get deer blood as I’m sure most of his deer processing is over.
Was looking at the dog bone kit on Amazon that has a piece of hide, sent a few other things. I watched his video also which states a lot of what you guys have also said. I have a set of antlers that I let him chew on outside. He’s only 9 weeks old.

I don't agree with this at all. My dog has picked up thousands of ducks over her lifetime and also trailed more than 10 deer successfully. I know other folks with dogs who are equally as active hunting ducks and have trailed a lot more deer. Never heard of anything like your post.

I’m not that concerned about duck hunting. I only duck hunt when I get an invite. Wife and kids don’t eat it so I gave it up.

Louisiana law requires deer tracking dog to be on a leash.I suppose the chance of getting caught are slim but I would be worried that coyotes might find the deer before the dog.Could be bad for the dog.

Doesn’t have to be deer blood, just blood in general.
