Thinking of tanning a deer hide with deer brains. Anyone done this? How did it turn out? Any help with technique would be appreciated.

Watched a YouTube video one time about it. Didn't look fun, but supposed to work well

Yeah, you use your brains to go buy the proper tanning chemicals. That is how you use brains to tan a deer hide.

Much better than using squirrel livers, but then...
What the hell are you talking about?

I helped do it once and it was a very messy project. Just bring them to your taxidermist and let them tan them.

Well I did not expect these type responses on this board. Tanning with brains is a long recognized technique that uses natural ingredients and if safe around children which is not the case with commercially available products. Maybe the brains possessed by some of the responders would best be utilized for tanning. Google it.

I think a taxidermist would do it for $50.
If you don't have $50 to spare you're in the wrong sport bro

Ihuntsum1, haven't tried this method yet but will soon. I've got a couple of buddies who did and the hides came out great. They youtubed the process and went for it. The dumb responses are a bit of a surprise. Starting to get OTish around here. Anywho, good luck!

They used brains to tan a hide on "Mountain Men". That's all I got.

With what we know about brain born illnesses, no way I would let children around raw deer brain.

I am fully aware that brain tanning hides is how the Indians use to do it. There is a lot of tradition with that technique. I would advise finding a website that specializes in tanning to get legitimate information and instructions.
Also, it's a lot of work. If you just want tanned hides get a professional to do it. If you want to do it for a hobby, then it would be good to do. It is time and labor intensive.
