I’m seeing 50% chance of rain Friday and Saturday and want to get some seed in the ground. I’m planting a WHS Big Boost Brassica blend. What nurse crop and ratio should I plant for right at an acre? 20-30% Winter peas is what I was thinking… Anyone had any luck with something else? Or should I do stand alone and split it down the middle with something else?

Where are you located? If I planted brassicas (or pretty much anything else) this early the army worms would wipe them out.

Down here I just throw oat, wheat and a cereal rye and cover then toss brassica on top and let rain do the rest.

Unless you’re in Iowa or north of there, your shite is going to die if you plant right now. The rain this weekend MIGHT result in germination then the young plant will die.

Wait until late Sept to Oct to plant.

I buy a mix that my local seed store puts together. It's about a gallon of seed per half acre.

In the mix:
3 types of clover
Oats
cereal rye
wheat
iron peas
turnips
rape

of those the ones that see the deer eat the most aggressively is the rape. It can't hardly grow for the eating it.

This year a may plant just peas, rape, turnips and clover.

Zone 9A pine plantation after tons of lime and some triple 13 over the years, the plots(log loading areas) are doing good with a brassica/bell beans/barley mix planted every October. Not sure of the percentage of each, but all three grow and the deer take out the bell beans first.

Bbvdd,
Out of curiosity, where do you get this mix? Which local store? I’m not far from you.

Hall's seed and feed in Collierville.

They're great. Buy most of my farm stuff from them.

Where are you located? Everything I’ve read on time to plant tells me 6-8 weeks before first frost. For me, that’s within the next week or so…

I always do my brassicas in a dedicated strip/ portion by themselves, especially the WMS Bayou Kale. I've never seen deer in January hammer something like they do bayou kale, so I started doing it in its own dedicated strips, which makes it easier to adjust for lime, fertilizer, etc.

I also like the WMS Brassica Blend for variety, but the last 2 years I've gone exclusively with Bayou Kale for brassica forage. 2 counties over at my camp they don't hit it nearly as hard, so results may vary, but I've always found that to be the case in our area with brassicas. Alot depends on the weather and how cold it consistently gets. Of course, food availability affects it too, along with fertilizer and soil conditions. I've seen stands of brassicas go basically untouched.

Most brassicas are 5 to 10 lbs/ acre, I always go 10+ and lay the fertilizer to it.

Man that seems like a way over-seeding. Everything I’ve read says to go with a scant measurement if anything.

I thought brassicas was the one thing youre not supposed to seed heavy. Better to go lighter than heavy.

WMS recommends 8 to 10 lbs per acre for their bayou kale, and 10 lbs/acre for brassica mix, in pure stands. There are generic extension office-type charts that say 3 to 5 per acre for most brassicas in pure stands (some even 1 to 3 lb/acre), but especially with a company of the caliber of WMS, I'm going by their label rates every single time. It also depends on what brassicas you're going with. There's a huge size difference between, say, radish seeds and turnip seeds. If you seed radish at the rate you seed turnips, you're going to be disappointed.

I've never ever had a problem with thin stands, but all I've ever used is WMS brand, AND I only plant my brassicas in stands by themselves. WMS recommends 2-3 lbs per acre of their brassica mix if it's a mixed stand of forage.

I always have beautiful, thick stands of brassicas every year, and I plant 15 to 20 acres every fall Go by the seed company labels and adjust from there, is my recommendation. I'm just telling you what works for me and my soil - and works very well.

I plant brassicas and won’t plant until October. Area 4 Louisiana right in the MS state line.

I use oats as a nurse crop. Germinate quick and offer a bit of regrow ability.

I’m no expert, but I’d be hesitant to use winter peas as the nurse crop. In my experience winter peas have been the seed that needs a cover crop. Everytime I plant them they get absolutely hammered early, and they don’t regrow.
