Going squirrel hunting in the morning. He’s stoked. 11 years old. Single shot 22. We did some target practice earlier in the year pre-COVID. Taking him back to the range this afternoon.

Will post results tomorrow.

Awesome! He's a little older than when some kids start, but better late than never. Good luck, and the weather looks great.

That's how I learned my way around the woods, my dad, uncle and I never missed a season for about 15 years.

The 22 is hard though, get him a 410 or 20 gauge.

That .22 can make for a tough outing. 20 Gauge put more bushytails on the ground. Good luck have a great time.

I’m 72 years old and I will never forget my Dad taking me squirrel hunting my first time,I was 8 years old. I shot a squirrel with a single barrel 16ga. And I dropped the gun and and caught the squirrel before it hit the ground. Your kids gonna love it but a 22 for a squirrel high up in a tree is gonna be a challenge for him.

Heck yeah, Dad!

My son is 6 and I've been taking him a couple times per season for a few years. He's still toting his red ryder when we go and still thinks he's killed a few with it. Getting close to growing into his .410 and doing it for real.

I actually just told him we would plan on going next weekend on his way to school this morning. He was fired up.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Memories to last a lifetime, keep an eye out for snakes in your son’s path in front of him as he looks up for squirrels...

Just wondering how the youth hunt works. Can you as an adult hunter shoot also, or can only the kids shoot? Have a 9 year old who is getting somewhat interested in hunting.

I’m thinking I can hunt for other things like rabbits and dove that are in season. So I’m bringing a shotgun.

And my son has gone hunting with me before but this is his first time hunting himself. He shot a deer last year out of a shooting stand with me.

the .410 is a great squirrel gun, but I'm sure everyone here still has, and uses, their "first shotgun" that their dad gave them to hunt. Get him an older (90s/early 2000s or earlier) 870 youth 20 gauge. Best shotgun I've ever had. (sadly I've heard modern Remingtons are not what they used to be though)

So no luck this morning. It was a bit foggy. Sat down till about 8am, then did a bit of stalking. Will give it a go again in the morning. He had fun. Way it goes.
