Taking advantage of low duck pond levels? As in bone DRY!!!

So, my 7 acre lease pond is all but dry now. I know we will get rain this fall and it will fill but what should I do now?
Plant something in it? rice? milo? sunflower for cover and food? other?
build a couple of blinds while it is dry and easy to get to?
get a dozer/backhoe and dig it out some more?
fix the overflow pipe?
FWIW the last two options will get costly and the land owner is old and cheap.

Nah, there are 5 other smaller ponds all holding water and on natural springs, and there is a nice creek. This is just the largest of the lakes and the one we duck hunt the most.
It will fill again by mid October especially if a tropical storm hits the Texas coast.

Not sure about what to plant, but setting up blinds would be a whole lot easier and probably a good idea while you're sitting around waiting for water.

Yes to all.
But with a priority to planting . . . but not for ducks . . . for wildlife . . . that you would never hunt; and the blinds . . . but not because you planted there.

You still never fixed that pipe? Can you find the end of it now that there is no water. Crawl in there and dig it out with a shovel.
I would definitely plant it. Is it dry enough to get a tractor in there?

I cant even see the pipe the entire lenght is buried. Im going to take a metal detector out there and mark it off so I can find the end then dig it out.
FWIW, 70+ hour work weeks and lease members that agree to ideas but dont show up to help or pay for things makes getting anything done REALLY slow.
Deacon, plant what for what wildlife?
What should I plant if I want cover come duck season considering the normal taller cover is all at the edges of the pond but the water will not be up to those edges for months.

I don't know . . . but you're NOT planting for ducks.

Plant rice, milo and millet. Not sure what you can plant for cover though. Could you build a mound up where you want to hunt? YOu could then plant some type of shrub on the mound to use as cover.

Feed stores sell these black container discs that have a corn molasses hardened mixture in them . Bury some and the smell is suspose to attract ducks

Someone told a buddy of mine that sweet potatoes did this too . . . of course, they didn't tell him sweet potatoes float.

quote:I was told a story about using sweet potatoes, they cut up a whole bunch and put them out, came back a day or 2 later or something like that, the ducks were all drunk. Something about it ferments in their stomachs and they couldn't fly they just sat there halfass flapping looking stupefied.

It sounded like a total croc of shite but made for a hilarious story.

I think he tossed them out before daylight . . . sun came out to bobbing sweet potatoes.
Made me laugh when he told me about it.
This is the same buddy that when I hunted with him the one time last year asked me:
Him: Is it dove season?
Me: I don't kn . . .
Him: BOOM!!!!
Me: That wasn't a dove.

Ok, so maybe I misunderstand but I thought it was fine to make habitat improvements including planting food sources as long as they were established by season (ie not throwing out corn and calling it planting 2 days before season). am I wrong?
