Looking at houses now and a few we like have inground swimming pools. I wouldn't mind having one...I have a 16 year old son and 6 year old daughter that would enjoy it.

Few questions:

1) Are they a PITA to keep up?

2) Expense per month?

3) How much extra in homeowner's insurance am I looking at?

4) One is a saltwater pool.

TIA, if we get one with a pool, we will not have an OBGT.

saltwater pool.
Parents have one and I like it. Notice if there are any trees in the area. Leaves are a PITA

The only way I would have one is if I lived out in BFE with no neighbors to drop in.

We live in the south, it gets hot as balls where we live, it is much better to have than to have not. Stay away from salt, lots of corrosion issues with salt...

What about insurance premiums?

I had a pool at my parents and I wouldn't recommend one. It is more of a pain in the arse than anything. I would rather just have a big backyard

If you make an offer on a house with a pool make sure to take the pool into account, houses with pools generally sell for less than comps without them.

Yeah, that's what I have been told. Funny how sellers try to ask for more because they have a pool.

Saltwater is the way to go and make sure they don't have liner. Freshwater pools and ones with liners are the ones that cost a lot.

Insurance will not be affected, however if there is a slide or diving board, or is not fenced or doesn't have a locking gate you will be ineligible with several companies.

Not a big deal at all, just make sure no slide, no diving board and the pool is fenced.

Awesome. The one I like has a saltwater pool with liner and diving board. I guess replacing the liner is expensive? I can always remove the diving board.

I have a fiberglass pool with a salt chlorinator. It is almost maintenance free. I do have to watch the pH.

Mine is not. I do have some oak tress in my backyard that are not fun

Orginally I added 15 bags of salt(which wasnt bad, they are about 6 dollars a bag). Other than that the monthly cost is very small. Usually in the spring I will buy about 150-200 dollars worth of chemiclas to get the water chemistry "right".
