I’m looking for a rifle or carbine in 22lr to shoot suppressed. I like the very anemic subsonic 22lr bc they are extra quiet. They don’t always cycle well in my Taurus TX22, though. For such low powered rounds, would it be best to use a bolt action? Or will a Ruger 10/22 cycle ok? I know the 1050fps will cycle, but I’m talking about CCI 710fps rounds. Very weak but very quiet.

Ideally, I’d like a barrel about 16” and preferably wood stock, but that’s not a deal breaker. I also don’t want to spend a bunch bc this is just a back yard plinker and I already own three 22lr rifles.

I’m leaning towards bolt action bc it’s reliable, so any recommendations?

Not a wood stock but I highly recommend a Savage Mark II FVSR

my MP 15/22 is the tits. It cycles everything. BTW with a suppressor don’t spend big money on “suppressor” rounds, CCI standard velocity is quiet and cheap

That Savage looks like it fits what I want. It seems there aren’t many threaded barrel/wood stock combinations in my price range (under $350) so I can live without. The shorter barrel length is more important.

The FVSR may fit into the Savage Mark II BRJ stock that is laminate but I’m not sure. You would also be going over budget if you did that though.

I’ve got two FVSR’s and they are great .22 bolt guns for what they cost

Here's a wood threaded 10/22 for a little over $300

I have it and it's been pretty accurate at 50 yards with CCI standard. I haven't shot it suppressed. I put the BX trigger in it and it's so much better than the shite trigger that comes stock

You can find the above mentioned Savage here for less than $300

Yes get a bolt action for these. They are movie quiet in a bolt action.

I have a ruger american in 22 wmr and its a tack driver. 16 or 18" threaded barrel, the 22 lr version is similar.

Out of curiosity, what's those rounds shooting 500-700 fps "effective" range? 25? 50 yards?

Probably around 50. It falls off fast.

I have the ruger American 22lr. It’s great and one of my favorite guns. If you are looking for maximum quiet than go with a bolt action for sure.

How are the magazines on that savage? I've heard mixed reviews.

I built a Volquartsen Summit and put a Dead Air Mask on it. With RWS subsonics it's a lot quieter than my Benjamin 392

Yeah that’s what I’m thinking. To clarify, I’m plinking in a suburban backyard. This ain’t the country. It needs to be very quiet. Sometimes there’s a rat to shoot at for fun.

Those Volquartsens are the tits. Guy at my camp has one topped with a nightforce. Whisper quiet (suppressed, of course) and will split a frog hair at a good distance. Can't hold a candle to my 10-yo and his MOWaterBottle Red Ryder, though.
