A sealed gel battery is much better than any unsealed lead core battery

Well yes, but sealed geltops are not exclusive to bluetops

Optimas are not what they once were

In your opinion what has changed with them?

Reliability. They were purchased several years back and changed manufacturing. You either get a good one or a bad one, and they have a high defective rate in comparison to others.

Also, I suggested an AGM, which IMO is better

What if I told you ALL Lead based wet style Batteries from Walmart, Autozone, Napa, O'Rielly's, Your local tackle store, Amazon, Interstate, Battery Warehouse, and every mom and pop place you can think of is all made and owned by the same company....Johnson Controls. Mind Blown huh. The few that are exceptions are the optima's and Lithium Ion companies that have came along.

I'm waiting on someone to come out with a lithium battery/brushless trolling motor combo. Will be a game changer.

Bad thing about lithium is you can't let them ge tin temps above 105 degrees or it will significantly shorten their lifespan.
But they're way lighter and last longer so your boat will perform better since you're shedding weight and you won't need to replace them as often.

they are usually 6 volts, but big. They make Marine 6 volt packs, but they are expensive and really used on big diesels, but they have very long amp hours

i realize lithium is already being used in marine applications. But, when the trolling motors become brushless then we're talking about a great combination. For some reason brushless/lipo combination works awesome. Have you seen a 1/8th scale RC buggy or truggy running 6s lipo with a 250 amp brushless motor and controller?

It's awe inspiring.

I have 2 group 27 Exide batteries (Academy brand) running my trolling motor. The boat is a 2013 that I bought last year from a fella that had started traveling a lot for work and wasn't able to keep up on maintenance of the summer. Both batteries were completely drained and badly needed fluid when I bought the boat. Managed to save one that’s still in great shape but the other has an internal short. Hasn’t stopped the TM from working but definitely plan to replace them in the next month or two.

If I stick with flooded batteries then I am considering replacing them with new Exides. Would much rather AGMs but don’t see the benefit for me when taking into account the price difference.
