What in the way of tools do you need to build your own? I own zero gunsmithing tools.

A punch set and a castle nut wrench. That's all I remember needing at least for a lower. Never assembled an upper.

OP
Complete upper with quad rail. $239
Less BCG and charge handle
LINK
Complete lower with Magpul furniture. $179
LINK
Charge Handle. $24
LINK
BCG. $99
LINK
$541.00 For a complete gun and you need no tools to assemble. Simply push the lower pins out, drop on the upper, push pins back in after you drop in your BCG and charge handle.

With shipping and FFL fee they come out to about the same thing. I am new to AR's, Do I come out with that much of a better product? How do I know that I am ordering quality parts, or just take your word for it and order what you linked?
I have looked at that option before and pretty much had picked out the same thing you did. It probably wont get much use, more or less just to have one, maybe a hog hunt here or there.

here's mine when i first got it.
I've shot way over 2000 rounds through it. Tough gun, everyone likes shooting it compared to the M16 style ones you can buy for cheap at Walmart and Academy.
All i did was pt a reflex sight on it now.

And I don't want to derogate people's choices in their weaponry - but this would do me no good. It would need 1 of everything replaced.

Anderson is on the same level as the S&W Sport, Ruger 556 and others in that price range. Fact of the matter with all the cheap ARs is that your getting a barrel chambered with a lot looser quality standards, with a really gritty and heavy trigger mounted in receiver sets with larger tolerance gaps. These are rifles that will shoot, mostly reliably, a 1"-4" group at 100 yards depending on the sample you get. If that fits what you are looking for then it will be a perfect fit. If you're looking for better accuracy you're going to need to spend a little more coin.
I've been trying to figure it out for the longest why, for whatever reason, the gun community as a whole seems to be really picky about their handguns/shotguns/hunting rifles and completely unpicky about their ARs. Hi Points, S&W Sigmas, Bersa, Taurus, etc. gets bashed for being an economical handgun, that at the end of the day mostly go 'bang', but have bad ergomonics/triggers/accuracy/aesthetics or whatever. Then these bottom of the barrel ARs get the highest marks as good starter rifles. Where's the crowd that usually advises a beginner looking at Sigmas to "save a few more hundred, buy something better quality."?
I'm not saying there is anything wrong with getting an M&P Sport or Ruger 556 or Anderson if you're looking for a rifle as described in the first paragraph. They have their place in the market. But, know what you are getting compared to what you could get or build for a little more. As always you get what you pay for, with cheaper manufacturing comes less quality control.

This is what the wife got me for my birthday. The Sport II, I think she did good.

I built this rifle with optic for $508.33 with tax and shipping. For my first I wanted to buy each component separately and assemble it myself instead of just buying an upper and lower or a complete rifle. I could have built it cheaper.

PSA had some PTAC 16" carbine kits for $299 before Thanksgiving. Built one up and works great. Have less than $350 in it. Used a carry handle for the rear sight.

I love that 80% lower. Wish I could've gotten mine done but the equipment would've just been too expensive.
