Everyone will say ,No, but I have a Vortex Crossfire II 4 x 12 that is a damn fine scope with lots of eye relief. The cost is only about $200. I have this paired up with my $400 plus Ruger American, and I have no problem hitting targets even though I am not a great shot.

Got a Meopta Optika6 a couple of years ago after using a low budget “came with the gun” Bushnell for years. Man, is that nice glass. Want to say I paid around $800 give or take.

You should get an SWFA so you can play with twisting turrets at the 1000 yard range

I wouldn't base my purchase on this so much if you aren't shooting hundreds of rounds
Get a caliber you're comfortable with at some distances.
20+ rounds to break in the barrel
5-10 MAX to sight it in
1 per deer afterwards
That being said, if you want to shoot 400 you need to practice that. I'd go VX-5HD 3-15x44 for $950
Yeah that is probably the best advice that I have completely not been taking into account. I'm not necessarily getting anything right now, I just always have to be saving for something on the side and I want to go ahead and figure out what I want.
I have an old .270 but have been mostly hunting with a 30-06 or my brother in law's .308. I haven't had a lot of time to deer hunt the last few years but that will change this year. I don't think I'd be taking 400 yard shots anyway based on knowing my own limitations, but it is cool that they have the dial feature on the Leupold.
I do like the .308 round for a cheaper deer rifle just based on stopping power. Love my old 30-30 but I've had to chase nearly every dear I've shot with it. Shot a doe with a .308 a year or two ago, not super close but not over 250 yards and it just dropped.

I don’t have a .270 (alternate between .308 and 6.5 cm).
My buddy has used the same .270 for 40 years and has more mounts hanging on his wall than anyone else I know. I’ve helped him load a few up over the years.
He’s also the best shot of anyone I know and obviously doesn’t get the shakes like I do.

My dad isn't a hunter but we moved to BFE when I was a baby and my neighbor was like an uncle and had me deer hunting with him from like 5 and he always hunted (and still does even though they moved back to Starkville) a Remington pump 270. I loved shooting that gun. I never really see any pump deer rifles anymore. Truth is all these rounds will kill deer, I've always just had shitty scopes and want to get a decent one, but would rather not pay over $1k so I can put it on the rifle or another impulse buy like cases of steel shot this summer.
As for the bow. I have never gotten into it, but I plan on it, but finding a budget starter bow for the offseason will have to be an entirely different thread.

I use a Remington 308 pump my grandad gave to me when I turned 12. 26 years ago. Every time someone sees the gun, it blows their mind.
Anyway, it’s the only gun I trust and it knocked down a 10pt last Sunday. Dead where he stood.
God damn I love that gun.

Yeh I'd have to look up, or ask him the year and exact name, but it is a badass gun and going on probably 40 years or more. I had my pawpaws old wood master in 30-06 but I never shoot it. I think the pump beats the semi auto in old Remingtons.
This looks very similar to how i remember it looking.
Such a cool looking gun. I'd imagine you can find them used and in good condition but might not be cheap.
ETA: Yeah it was a 760 Game master. I liked it a lot better than the wood master.

It has NEVER failed me. Killed a lot of deer with it. I’m never gonna switch.

While we are side stepping onto bows, and talking a little of everything budget for deer. What brands are worth looking into for a starter bow? Mathews and solo cam still prominent?
Posted on 1/5/22 at 7:50 pm to BorrisMart
Find a used Mathews Halon, Triax, etc

Best Budget Scope for Deer Hunting under $1k
Your idea of ‘budget’ and mine differ greatly.

Matthews is still probably the most popular brand. I am partial to Hoyt, but the main thing is to get a bow that fits you. That is 10x more important than brand. Some bows are more forgiving, others offer higher performance but less margin for error. The best bet is to go to a GOOD bow shop and look around and talk to them. There are not that many of those unfortunately.

Zeiss Conquest 3-9 or 3.5-10 by 50. I have three. All bought used and I have barely over $1k in all three combined.
Zeiss Conquest 3-12x56 can be had in your budget at Scott’s Outdoors in Jay FL
Meopta Meostar 3-12x56 can be bought at the same place but will be a tick over the $1k budget with tax and shipping.
I buy used scopes almost exclusively. I have Kahles, Zeiss and an old Swarovski. Haven’t paid over $600 for any of them. Some higher end new Leupold may have similar quality glass but I’d never be able to tell.
What I have can all be resold for what I paid or more. You pay $600 plus for a new Leupold, Vortex, Trac Toric, SWFA, GPO, etc etc etc you better like it. You will be lucky to get 50 cents on the dollar if you want to get rid of it.
There is no worse place to cheap out than guns and optics. You may give the gun to your grandchildren, what in the hell does another $500 mean when the purchase may stay in the family 30 years?
FYI your best $ spent on a rifle is a used Sako, an old one.

Yea for under $1k I'd buy a Swarovski Z3 4—12x50 without a doubt. The resale will be better than anything else.
