The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will open 20 bays of the Bonnet Carré Spillway Friday after the Mississippi River was forecast to rise to flood stage at New Orleans next week.
The corps said Thursday that as many as 105 of the flood structure's 350 bays could be eventually opened to relieve pressure on levees further down the river.
According to the National Weather Service, the Mississippi River is forecast to rise to 17 feet at the Carrollton gauge by Wednesday, April 2. The river is expected to remain above 15 feet through the end of April.
Friday will mark the fifth time in five years that the flood control structure has been opened. Before 2011, the spillway had only been opened on average once every decade.

I think the silver lining of this is it looks like it will only be open for 10 to 15 days.

I wouldn’t put money on that.

I would like to know why we do not use Morganza and Old
River?
River?

We need to quarantine the MS river

There is legitimate concern that if they open Morganza they won’t be able to get that genie back in the bottle.

shite might be able to be stopped if we open it. Open the morganza isn't as simple as opening and closing a gate.

What if we let the river fill up and flush out the corona in NOLA a little?

Then what purpose does it serve.

Crawfish prices go up as a result.

The Morganza Spillway by law can only be opened when the river hits a set flow rate. The effect of opening it impacts agricultural interests, oil and gas facilities, homes, and cities downstream. I know it impacts fishing interests when Bonne Carrie is opened, but it has less impact than Morganza. This is the reason for the higher trigger flow.

Why was t it opened last year when that magic number was reached?
Posted on 4/2/20 at 7:56 pm to Wolfmanjack
If memory serves me, it hit the flow rate but the rates downstream dropped so they avoided opening it.

Like what? My understanding is that it lessens the load on ORCS. It likely promotes sedimentation downstream, but would not be an immediate threat to the ORCS, I wouldnt think.
