Pretty sure Mississippi doesn’t require titles for boat trailers, so guessing a bill of sale with the right info will be critical to register in LA

One caveat, if the trailer has ever been titled in another state before Mississippi you will need the title to go with it.

I bought a boat/trailer out of Miss. years ago that had been originally owned and titled in Florida. The owner in Florida had died and a guy in Miss. bought it and didn't need a title as Miss. is a "non-titling" state.

Anyway, long story short, I had to jump through so many hoops, I was about to scrap the trailer and buy a new one just to get a damn license plate. That was 25 years ago so I don't remember all the details, but I had to wind up bringing it to the La State Police headquarters and have them inspect the trailer to prove it was the one that was previously registered in Miss.

Just a word of advice in case you run into this situation.

I am completely on board with the three F’s rule but it really doesn’t cover used aluminum boats. There is a cost unit matrix that needs to be applied.

Talk to your insurance agent, But definitely liability. Maybe someone could chime in on other companies that might cover an aluminum boat.

What kind of insurance would I need? And since son will be using, what considerations are there?

Homeowners probably covers small boat, but umbrella usually needed to cover liability. Not sure how much extra you need on a small boat.

Homeowners agent will know.

I have a 16 ft with a tiller handle, i use as a beater. 40hp yamaha 4 stroke. ITs still carbed so not much to work on. finding a beater will teach him how to work on it and fix it, but will give some rough patches out on the water.

i helped my son buy a 14/42 with a 2 stroke Yamaha 25. It is about as basic as you can get. the boat has a title, but the trailer did not. I am working on getting the trailer legal right now. The boat had no floor and no wiring. We are currently adding lights and a bilge pump and a aluminum floor. We rewired the trailer for taillights. The bottom had a decent dent, so we fixed that yesterday. The engine is an older 2 stroke Yamaha, but it is a single carb 2 stroke with literally 5 wires.

Hopefully we will have it going soon so he can hit the water. I am looking too to get libality insurance on it through progressive.

I’m heartbroken for my son. He’s worked, saved and looked for a first boat for 1 year. Finally found one on Marketplace, had been in communication with the seller (retired guy) 3 hours away, and had agreed to meet Saturday in the middle to look and take it for a test ride. Had coordinated a notary location and everything. He’d been talking to him for over a week and we just were not able to get there any sooner than this weekend. I was proud of him for doing all of that mostly on his own. Even had a friend of ours who knows boats well willing to come along to get it.

I know people can be unreliable, but this just stings more than usual.

I would get one at least 48 inches wide. At that width the boat is stable enough for two men to stand on the front or rear corner without feeling tippy.

My son and I are both about 6’2 and 200 pounds and our 16/48 aluminum Jon boat feels solid no matter what we do.

Ours is a 1990 with a 25hp tiller short shaft Mercury. It’s perfect for us because we fish mostly shallow rivers. It wasn’t expensive but I love it. It’s been pretty bullet proof.

I agree, don't go narrower than a 48".

I bought a 95 alumacraft crappie special off Facebook 2 years back. 3k all in. Its a stick steer so im up front when driving. Dont even have to stand up to drop trolling motor. And at 3k all I n not worried about stumps and oyster shells near as much

Oops. 3500 now. I replaced the throttle controls and got a updated trolling motor. One that came on it was giving me issues I think the wiring was bad somewhere. Didn't feel like messing with that

Too small, get at least a 16-48 , safer and able to go in slightly larger places, or you’ll be looking again in a year , just went through the same thing with my grandson
