In my experience, if you have water close by that's where he will head to.

Did you find him?
I've tracked only a few we never found.
Twice, we have walked within 2-3 feet of a dead deer and missed it. Once, a buck crawled under a palmetto frond. Unreal how well concealed this deer was.
Second was in thick briars. To this day, I claim that one of my buddies stepped on this deer and never saw him. Luckily, we doubled back and found it.
So, did you find your buck?

You may get lucky if you didn't bump him again. Make big circles from last known location if no blood to follow.
Good luck, and update us tomorrow.

I gut shot a doe a few weeks ago. She was pumping blood so not sure what else I hit. She was dead in a creek about 150 yards away
You mentioned the deer "wheezing". I shot a buck two weeks ago. I got down immediately and found blood. Figured he was dead close. Jumped him and he blew at me and ran a little ways and blew a few more times. Have him an hour and went back. Lung shot and I think him blowing was him trying to clear the blood out of his nose. That may be what you were hearing.
Good luck and keep us updated. Like someone said earlier, if there is water nearby he may be there

Then you shouldn't have shot.

If you done jumped him you wont find him. sorry
With a good dog, you will....I found one for someone a couple weeks back after they bumped him up....they let it lay for another 3 hours and he was dead 150 yards from where they bumped him.....without the dog though, it's gonna be tough and pure luck to find him
