Absolutely a cotton mouth. 100%.
Wild how many folks on this board and in general are confidently wrong with snake ID's.
TgrDad will be here to squash these incorrect ID's shortly I'm sure.

I'm not seeing cottonmouth head width in OP's pic. Could be wrong though.
ETA: Alx is good with snake IDs and says cottonmouth so I guess I'm wrong. Just didn't see it from such a far out pic

[/img] Water Mocassins are almost goofy in the water.... much slower swimmers that almost seem to float vs a banded or other watersnake. Too many people depend on "diamond head" for ID and do so incorrectly.
The length to width ratio and also a dead giveaway. A banded watersnake of that length wouldn't be nearly as thick.

Yup, as is the triangular shape of the body(blow up the pic). Notice I didn't say "Head".
Many snakes in defensive mode will flatten their head and appear triangular or "Venomous" especially water snakes and "I know" some water snakes like the Diamond Back Water Snake have triangular bodies but the Diamond Back doesn't live in Florida.

I assumed db based on the triangular body but didn't realize OP was in florida.

This appears to be a Nerodia sipedon pleuralis or MIdland Water Snake. Not usually seen in FL

Good point.
Hey OP!
Where was this picture taken?
Posted on 6/19/25 at 3:23 pm to farad
It almost looks like he's resting on a piece of rusty rebar. I hope that's not the case cuz he might get an infection from that....
