I have a pit barrel cooker. Pretty simple. Not a true "smoker" but it makes some good meat.

I've got one of those but i smoke using a komado and a homemede contraption that interestingly enough is set up like a PBC.

Anyway, as a smoker, i find the PBC to be pretty terrible and to me, it produces some pretty acrid and greasy smoke that i can't tolerate.

However as a hight heat cooker, it's fantastic and well worth the money. In my experience nothing and i mean NOTHING does wings (mass quantities of them) and half chickens better than a PBC. I get it up to 400 to 450 and the outcome is a golden crispy work of food art.

If i can figure out how to post pics, i'll show you how i hang mass quantities of wings.

I'd look hard at a propane smoker. Better smoke flavor than an electric, pretty easy to set it and forget it when tuned right, and not near the investment of a quality traditional smoker.

It cant do low temp or cold smokes like an electric though as many struggle to maintain temps under 200F reliably. So if fish and cheese are a big part of your plans, look elsewhere.

My frat bro dated this guy’s daughter.

He is a true bbq connoisseur.

All depends on what coin you are willing to drop.

I bought a Yoder YS640 5 years ago and could not be happier with it, I use it 10x more than I ever did my stick burner, so easy to trow anything on and maintains rock steady temps.

That being said I bought one son a GMG and another a Pit Boss as gifts last year and they are quite happy with them but they in no way compare to a Yoder which is expected due to the price point differences.

Occasional use I would go with the GMG, if you are going to use it more often bite the bullet and buy a Yoder, Memphis, Mac etc, and they will last a lifetime.

No matter what do not buy the Louisiana grills as they are Chinese junk.

Look man, you want to smoke meat and the only way is to buy a traditional smoker. I can recommend several books to help you along the way. These people who tell you to buy pellet grills or traegers have never put the work in. Smoking is an art and it really isnt that difficult. you'll be a better person and you will enjoy it far more if you do it the right way. leave the pellet smokers to the attorneys who dont have the time.

This is actually true.

Smoking with wood and a high quality lump charcoal is the way to go. You can do it with a komado or whatever else. Alot of folks like the weber smoky mountain. I'd go with that.

Smoking meat while not using a real smoker is like comparing jerking off to getting laid. Sure the end results are close to the same, but one of them is a helluva lot more fun than the other. Buy the smoker

Don't over think it. Look for something built with as thick of metal as you can afford. This keeps temp from swinging out of control. Then determine how much manual labor you want to put into smoking. Completely manual? Get a stick burner. Want something that requires a little work? Propane burner that burns sticks. Want something totally hands free just about and works like an oven? Go electric.

I have a vertical stick burner that I added a gas burner into the firebox. I keep wood in a cast iron dutch oven over the burner. It's very efficient and doesn't require much babysitting.

Sorry for just getting back to you.

Also, I misquoted the the smoke time, I was going off of memory from when I purchased 3 years ago... it was rated at 6 hours not 10...

I love my Cabelas brand pellet smoker. 3 years old and works great. I use it at least 4 times per month. I love setting, it going fishing all day and coming back to ready meal. I am away most all days while the smoker is still going.

How easy is it to use as a regular grill for like burgers and hot dogs? I dont want to have to use 2 different grills just to cook sonething for the neighborhood rats.
