Considering getting a pup and was wondering if there's anything that would be able to be trained to be a half decent bird dog and that would be suitable to a pretty small apartment. I'm not attached to the idea just spitballing with my roommate. Any thoughts or input is appreciated

Definitely Boykin. My Boykin is right under 30#. Awesome little dogs. Can retrieve waterfowl or be trained for upland bird dog.

not to mention a hunt test ribbon or two.

it is very unlikely that I will ever own a breed other than a boykin again.

awful nice having a 35lb dog in a boat, atv or around the house.

<----- Boykin owner here

Great size. Great drive. Loyal and sweet dogs.

Probably won't own another breed.

Mine is a "big" Boykin and weighs 40 lbs

When you say bird-dog, you talking upland pointing dog, flusher or retriever?

Any local Boykin breeders in the BR area? What's their temperament with kids?

Don't think so but haven't actively looked in a few years.

They seem to be fine around kids. mine is very tolerant of me messing with her ears, paws, etc...

After her first hunt:

I got her from Lazy Moon Kennels in Ashdown, AR (just north of Texarkana). I can provide contact information if you're interested. If so, e-mail me at

I'd love to find a girl for mine as well, so I could get the litter pic. Mine is a awesome dog, out of Chief (arguably the best boykin around, in b4 Mule)

I agree with a Boykin. Thinking that may be my next dog as well.

I'd suggest a Lab from smaller lines.

Interesting...I'm not a convict and would love to see your dog work. I'm in the BR area.

If you go the Boykin route talk to Phil and Karen Hinchman up in Greenfield Indiana. They raise true hunting dogs. They run Brandywine Creek Boykin Spaniels and have some awesome dogs.

If I were to get anything besides a lab it would be a Drahtaar but I pretty much only duck hunt and Dove Hunter so retrieving is all I need.

My griffon was a beast! He was my favorite of all dogs I've owned.
