This is a really interesting thread to read about how people react to different color dogs. If someone is looking for a silver lab I don’t really see what the problem is. Even if it takes mixing a Weimaraner with a lab to get the color you want it can still be a good dog. I have a Boykin Spaniel that I think is the greatest dog in the world and the Boykin is just a mix of several different breeds doesn’t mean that it is not a good dog.
I quess the problem is people get offended if you call it a lab. To make them feel better just call it a labaraner it works for the golden doodles.

Nah. It fits

I'll buy any dog I see fit, it's hilarious to me that you take everything,so serious. Night

Is it the spelling that's throwing you for a loop?

Please don’t get one.
Like the first commenter, get a real lab. They literally are not full blooded lab. They’re typically inbred to maintain the color from the weimerainer bred into them in the 50’s when “silver labs” became a thing.
So if you want a mutt that will cost twice the cost of DAMN GOOD blood line black, Choco, or yellow then go for it. If you want a cool color, look into Fox red labs and charcoal black.
They’re both actual recessive Labrador genes that show up in yellows and blacks , unlike silver which is a foreign gene.
My next dog will be a fox red to breed with my current black.
Please for the sake of the breed, don’t buy a silver
Edit; yes a mutt can be a good dog, I’ve been around tons of Labrador hunt test kennels and most wont even take silvers because they are so notoriously retarded from the inbreeding to mainatain the color, with as little weimerainer as possible. To do this they do a lot of uncle and cousin fricking with these dogs and use a black they have as the “sire” to maintain AKC registration. They whole breed (silvers are their own breed, they are not labs) , is literally a doggy factory scam.
If you want to risk your dog being untrainable and useless and incredibly overpriced just to get a desired color, you’re priorities are out of sorts. Just get a weimerainer if you want that color that bad. They are decent house dogs and water dogs. Not labs, but they can be trained better than an inbred weimerainer/lab mutt.
Good luck, if you need help finding a lab in louisiana I know several breeders that only breed hunt test proven , health certification tested dogs. I can without a doubt find you a nice litter for half the price of a typical silver puppy and you can likely pick choco black or yellow.
Red and charcoal will run you the price of a silver but they are actual labs. Give them a google, beautiful dogs.

As are labs and every other breed here. Anyone here saying "real lab" is full of shite.

Find the dog your wife wants... just know that there may be some issues down the line and be prepared to deal with them in your own way.

But in regards to everyone tell you... "please don't", the ole British Bulldog that every school loves as a mascot is a wrinkled walking vet bill. Yet, people love them.

To the OP, if you are getting a Silver just to have a cool looking dog, more power to you for dropping a grand on a sofa magnet.
Do you see the shite most people on here buy that 1. they dont even use, 2. buy just to look cool. frick when did this board get so pretentious? Id put money on it that most of the people saying "get a real lab" has a sofa magnet lab that cant retrieve.

Heck i bought a 1500 dollar Doberman that is basically my slippers when im in my chair. And i bet my doberman is a better retriever than most "get a real lab" peoples lab.

MAYBE once a year. Man these "get a real lab" folks are as bad as the "only adopt dogs from the shelter" queers.

It's hilarious the amount of whining you get out of people when you bring up the conversation of a Silver Lab. From hardcore waterfowl groups on facebook to tigerdroppings its all the same bitching and moaning. I've had yellow and black labs all my life and recently got a silver. She is by far the smartest and most driven dog I've had and would put her up against any dog in the field. I've come to the conclusion that most people are so pissy is either A. They cant afford the dog or B. There dog was put to shame in the field by a silver.

If you read closely you’ll see that much of the advice and concerns are regarding health issues. Breeding animals for their fun colors rather than health or performance isn’t usually a good thing

Edit: rather than downvote why don’t you provide us with a real response?

I don’t understand when this is said. A boutique silver is no more than any other well bred lab.

Own it if you want, I am sure it is a fine dog. But No need for the look at me statement

I suppose I could ask the Presidents of several AKC Chapters to come on here, but what would be the point? If I thought the OP had any sense I would tell him to call some of the top breeders in the US or UK. Kendall Herr at Dickendall would advise him against it. Again, it would not do any good. In a world where ignorance and irresponsibility are the orders of the day, no amount of good will or ill will can persuade people who don't give a shite.

Why would he care about what presidents of AKC chapters would have to say about this? the dude asked where he could get one.

Those guys would also advise to stay away from mutts at the pound because they are pure and AKC registered, but there is a place for those.... in the house of peasants. I dont hate on them for wanting throwaway's. So why hate on this guy for wanting a non AKC silver Lab.

And to the guy that says dogs are only bred for health and performance doesnt know do breading history, a lot were bred just for a look.
