I began re-reading David Moreland’s book last night and he mentions LDWF did an antler restriction in Area 6 02-04. After that it looks like Thistlethwait had a 10-yr antler restriction.

I've been hunting TW since 2015. The first 5 years we hunted I would see 8-10 mature bucks a year. Since they opened up all the extra firearm seasons and everyone started shooting 2 year old bucks, I maybe see 1 or 2 good bucks a year.

To the PA rules, seems the limit of one buck per season would do more towards growing older bucks than an antler restriction would.

That was not my experience. It’s always been 1 buck per year as long as I’ve hunted there. With 1 million hunters in the state, there was a lot of competition so people shot the first buck they saw.

Also, until fairly recently, the season was buck-only the first week of rifle season, and the 2nd week was buck and doe. Seems like most people hunted the first week only (or just the opening weekend and Monday) and shot anything with antlers. Big bucks became so rare that there was no shame in killing a little one.

Antler restrictions often create inferior horned deer.
Bought a place that was 8 point of better. We had the biggest 5,6,7 points.
Took years to turn it around.
1- age, not horn size
2- shoot older inferior horned deer, which is any without brow tines

Had a place in WBR parish during the horn restrictions and there was a huge bodied buck with jacked up horns that seemed to be banging every hot doe on place. Would even swim across the ICWW and bang them over there. To your point, the restrictions would have been more successful if we were given the latitude to shoot that buck and his offspring. They were easily recognized.
