Should I let Trees/Houseplants Freeze?

I have always protected my plants/citrus trees from frost and freezes. However, it seems that all plants would probably do better if they get a good frost on them each year so that they drop their leaves and start fresh in the spring....
I am not talking about a solid freeze, but just a frost or two to burn the leaves down...any thoughts on whether I should try it with a potted meyer lemon tree and a couple of other house plants?...

I wouldn't try it with citrus.

You will kill that lemon tree.

We never cover anything and it all does fine.

Frost will not kill citrus, period. It doesnt take a real hard freeze like most of our shrubs zoned for our area, but they can def take a good hard frost. You only need to cover them when its going to get down well below freezing and stay there for a pretty long period, as in more than a few hours. If its going to get anywhere around the mid-twenties at all, cover.

My only concern is the fact the lemon is in a pot not in the ground. I don't cover any plants that are established. I have a plant outside my dining room window that has bright red flowers that is in bloom. It gets knocked back pretty easy and my wife has Xmas lights in it so I guess I'll have to protect it till Jesus's birthday.
