One thing I really like about the frontier is that the front deck is HUGE. We were about to pull the trigger on a nautic star and decided to stop by the frontier dealer on the way home because it was another brand that we hadn't researched much (mostly because I thought all their hulls were uncapped) and figured we'd check out. Picked out our boat that day.

We have a regular 150 Yamaha 4 stroke and it will top out at 50 in the right conditions. Cruise at 35-40. I pushed for a 200 but my dad went with the 150.

I think i have narrowed it down to a 2200 Bluewave Purebay and the 2104 Frontier. Both boats seem to have the storage i want and from reviews they both handle very well. What would y'all consider under powered? I see a few Frontiers with 175 Zukes and several Bluewaves with 150 to 175 yamahas. I did see a Frontier with a 200 evinrude. How is evinrude these days?

I have the 2200 Pure Bay with a 150 Yamaha.

Frontier was also in my top few before I bought my Blue Wave in 2011. At the time Blue Wave was still a good value boat. I am not sure how much of a value brand they are now. Seems they have skyrocketed in price just since 2011 when I bought mine. Still a good boat though.

I will get bashed for the 150 but it has served me well. It's not fast but has easily met my needs. Cruises nicely at 38 mph at 4500 rpm with a full fishing load and 3 grown men. Would touch 50 on a light load when I first got it. Yes a 200 would be nice but not an absolute necessity if it's a tight budget. The 150 sips fuel.

The frontiers look like a good boat with probably the best value right now Just because of the surge in price on the Blue Wave. Let me know if you have any questions on the Blue Wave.

"Underpowered" depends on what you want to do.

I would wet test any used (and demo a new) boat before I bought it, then decide for yourself, some run good with 150s and some don't. Correct motor height and prop are critical.

Test it with full fuel and release/live wells with 2 or 3 people.

The blazer 2200 is really close to both of those boats you mentioned also

Yeah, i will test out any option i go with. I am moving up from an 18' xpress with a 90. So, my view on "underpowered" is i would just like to cruise in the mid 40s and have plenty of power to pull kids on the tubes and enough power to be able to run if needed. I just want a boat that will be well rounded. My little 90 has been great, i just want more power haha. I do like the blazer bays a lot i just haven't been able to find them like you can the frontiers and the bluewaves.

Alright let's see...last year my search came down to the pure bay 2200 and the frontier 2104.

We can go take a test ride in my boat if you want.

Bluewave and frontier have the same LOA, beam and weight. They will perform the same with the same motor. So it came down to layout and price.

I felt a 22' boat with the bow step up floor chest would take up too much room If your didn't use it as a fish box (no room to walk around the console with a 100qt ice chest there)
Frontier doesnt have this. With a 100qt chest I still have tons of room.

My buddy doesn't use the floor chest in his blackjback so he has his fish box behind his leaning seat and that's a PIA.

Frontier has a sharper V so it may ride better but I never been in a 2200 PB so I can't say for sure.

2104 Also has 4 hatches in the stern so more storage access but bilge access blows. It also has a wider front deck.

2200 was 10k more with all the identical options so that was a big deal. The guy who runs my gym has a 2016 2200 PB with the 200hp and has the same performance numbers as me.

ETA: with my 200hp
-25 gal of gas, 4 batteries, TM, no gear, 2 people I did 57mph

-40gal of gas, 3 people, all the above items plus 10' pp, fishing/safety gear, yeti with beverages and 100qt Coleman with 50 trout and ice I did 53mph

- cruise at 45 mph at 5000 rpms, 40 mph at 4500 rpms.

I've seen reports on the 2104 with the 150 maxing out at 43-48 depending on load and propping

Thanks for the run down. I may take you up on the spin in the Frontier. Thanks for pointing out the bow setup, i really didn't notice that from the pictures i looked at. It will probably come down to what kind of deal i can get for either the Frontier or the Bluewave with a 200+HP. I would also consider the 175hp if the price was right. I think i want to stay away from any 150hp. I saw a great deal on a 2013 Frontier with a 200HP Evinrude. Wish i was ready to pull the trigger.

I do have a question for Frontier and Bluewave owners. Does anything change on year models 13-17? Just wanted to make sure there wasn't a year model that i should stay away from or something.

Check out nautic star. Great layout and quality. There's a reason you see a bunch of them on the water. Ours stays slimed

Your right, i completely forgot about these boats. I need to check on them as well. What model Nautic Star competes with the 2200 Purebay and 2104 Frontier?

We replaced a cracked transom on a brand new one the other day. There was hardly any glass/composite, they used putty pucks on a tiny piece of composite. Not exaggerating one bit, the transom area was damn near hollow. I was shocked, it was either a lemon or they are starting to get lazy due to the success of their earlier boats

It could have been a couple years old

But it was in pristine condition. It was odd to say the least.

I don't think so but I'll ask. I don't technically work there, I just help out around the shop when I have time to work on lil skeet. It was fixed up with a 3" composite transom, a composite strong back for bracing, chop and woven roving. It's now bullet proof
