I got a Savage 308 gifted to me recently. I am looking for a decent scope in the $200 range if such exist, and some quality mounts? anyone have this rifle and if so what you got on yours?

I put a Nikon pro staff 3-9X40 on my rifle last year for around $200. I'm by no means an avid deer hunter, I just needed something to get me by for about 5 times a year when not chasing ducks. It has done the trick for me so far.

Congrats on your new gun! Hoping you have many enjoyable hunts w/ it. Nikon Prostaff's not a bad choice. To the list of "inexpensive" scopes I'd also add: Redfield Revolution and Leupold Rifleman. In addition, check out Natchez Shooters Supply as they usually have a number of factory refurbished scopes that are heavily discounted. I've bought some refurb scopes from them and been very happy. 3-9X magnification is fine for your scope.

As far as scope base/rings, I've converted nearly all my scoped handguns/rifles to the same set up: A Weaver 1 piece base w/ Burris Signature rings (the kinds w/ the plastic inserts). I don't like the one piece rings because it can limit proper positioning of the scope. When you install the base, install a screw, remove it, install the second screw, remove it, and continue until all screws have been installed. Doing this you can be sure each one has a tight fit. For the final installation of the base screws, add a drop of blue Loctite to each screw.
