Been wanting to add another semi auto rifle with some magazine capacity to my repertoire and I keep coming back to this one. Despite ammo cost I favor the .308 to the .223 because I feel like it's a more versatile round.

Anybody own one and be willing to list some pros/cons?

Fitted with this

Many here more knowledgable in the platform. Tell me if I'm an idiot or if you wish you had the setup.

Uses: fun mainly. Something hi cap, lethal, accurate out to 250 yards. Potential SHTF weapon as well as medium/large game.

My brother just bought one and we took it to the range. I really don't have anything bad to say about it except for the price. Shoots decent for that type of gun. The trigger is heavy but no creep. Loud as hell but should make a good pig gun.

Reviews say the recoil is very minimal for a .308 compared to other guns in the same style, any truth to that?

24-27 new. Looking at 34-36 after scope addition.

Looking like I may have a bonus coming down next quarter though.

I'm wanting something reliable that I can make additions to over time. I don't own anything in that AR platform at the moment

I would do it if I had the money. But I would go AR10 in something like a heavy barrel 20" with some nice glass. Get a REPR

Get an LWRC REPR. I hate the reciprocating charging handle on the SCAR pattern of rifles. It is very accurate and soft shooting, but the way I hold the rifle and the way the charging handle reciprocates, it does not work well for me.

Wait, is that $2400 to $3600, for a gun?

Wow

sorry, not much help, but a friend of mine uses the government edition as his primary service weapon. He pretty has the option of choosing any weapon available and uses that.

The only negative thing Ive heard about the SCAR is that it can be tough finding extra magazines for it and it is an expensive gun. Other than that, almost every review Ive read on the gun has been positive. Apparently its very accurate, relatively light, minimal recoil and reliable. I would definitely buy one if I had the money.

you will be entering a platform that doesn't have much aftermarket support. and any additions/changes you may want to make will probably cost you big.

I'm and AR hoarder, i just love the modularity and i think it is a well designed and proven system with more aftermarket parts than a honda civic.

in my opinion, the scars just feel big and blocky to me.

as to the 556 vs .308, you will get tired of pumping out that for a plinker. i used to have an AR10 but i got rid of it for that reason. they are just not as pleasant to shoot. all around, heavier, more expensive and not much gained with the intended type of use you are looking for.

but it is a very nice rifle. I've shot the 556, but not the 308

I looked at a SCAR 17S for a long time and eventually talked myself out of it. In January I ordered one of the new Rock River Arms X Series and it came in a couple months ago. To me, the RRA seemed like much more bang for your buck: stainless steel cryo barrel, two stage trigger, free floating hand rail, and probably more stuff I'm forgetting. At $1600 I have more money to spend on a scope at some point. However, I already own an AR and already having knowledge in the platform appealed to me.

I have the 4x ACOG on my AR-15. Awesome little scope and it's perfect for that gun. For a SHTF scope I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better one. Every time I look through the scope I'm impressed by how awesome it is.

I never considered an ACOG for my 308, I wanted the option to really shoot some tight groups at a medium range and I dont feel the ACOG is good for this. It's designed for quick target acquisition and to put bullets into a torso. It does this extremely well. But for a nice placed shot while hunting or if you want to blast bullseyes at 250 yards I think there may be better scopes than the ACOG. Take the ACOG comments with a grain of salt, just my opinion and the military guys can give better advice on them.

Im regards to precision shots, I find that the best scope for a .308 "battle rifle" would be 1-8 power.

The price alone should discourage you. Then you add in proprietary parts and all you are left with is something that weighs the same and offers less aftermarket options than an AR-10 like the SR762.

Google scar eats optics and look at that. Some it is bs, but that gun is hard on optics.
