salt/mineral blocks

Do any of y'all use these for deer, and if so can you give me some advise? What area of your property do place them, and when do you put them out?

I use red mineral salt for cattle. It’s a lot cheaper than anything marketed for deer. I put it out during turkey season on stumps or logs around my bow stands. Bucks want it during late spring-late summer while growing antlers. Does will hit it late summer/fall while nursing.

We used both the red and white blocks on our low fence place in the off season to try to keep them hanging around. Because of the cows we always kept them in the feeder pens.

Need to be putting them out now. As soon as things start turning green the deer will hit them and continue through the fall. I refreshed my sites 2 weeks ago.
I use a loose mix of 2parts mineral (red) salt - 1 part Dicalcium - 1 part white salt.

I usually mix a bag of minerals and half a bag of salt, then throw a protein feed block right next to it. You can start putting them out now and check them ever month or so to refresh if needed. They will hammer them during the spring and summer and a little into the fall, but they don't pay much attention to them in the winter IMO.

I was looking to get some of the 50 pound "trace mineral salt block" from Tractor Supply. How far apart do you place them? We hunt on 167 acres. Thanks for the help.

On 167 acres, I'd probably have about 3 mineral sites. I have 2 on 80 acres and they hit them hard from now until late summer/early fall. My advice would be to find a stump (preferably in sight from a stand) and stack 2 or 3 on it. Or pour bags of mineral salt, or both. And keep adding blocks every year. The ground and stump will become saturated with salt and the deer will keep coming year after year. They will paw the ground up and literally eat the salty ground.
ETA: I like to stack up about 10 or 12 of them and they last a couple years.

Mineral supplementation is kind of a touchy subject in some circles. If you believe in it, you want a product that has at least 4% P and twice as much Ca. The cheapest option is to mix stock salt and di-calcium phosphate. Read the labels, most stuff marketed as "Trace Mineral" is just salt. You don't need one branded for deer, tractor supply has goat and cattle mineral that is almost identical. This article from QDMA is about as fair of an explanation as you can get.
