Is either one significantly better than the other as an entry level AR? No need for the "spend $800 more and get X gun" comments.
Thanks

You have to get a Colt...

JK , they all go bang. Do you want to put optics on it or are looking for a mil spec type with iron sights?

I personally hate those handguards.

If I were going cheap, I'd just get a blemished PSA model and call it a day

I have the Ruger, DieselTiger has the S&W. We've shot them side by side and interchangeably and there isn't a noticeable difference

I may eventually put something on, but not immediately. It'll be mostly for plinking and ocasionally ear holing some pigs.

I'll take a look at those too. Thanks

Kinda what I figured. I've always been a Ruger fan, but my last two purchases were a SR45 & a Shield. That 45 was a POS and well the Shield is great. My view on them has been skewed a little, even though it's a couple cheap models.

Couple of bucks more, you can get a PSA .308, would be better for pigs, not for plinking in high quantity though

Dude I built one through Palmetto State for $440 without Magpul fore grip, or magazine. Last I looked they had the same thing I built (Freedom rifle) for sale as a unit for $450 free shipping, with the extras.

Hard to beat that. My gun is MOA with irons.

Out of both of the guns you are looking at, I'm a Smith and Wesson guy.

ETA: They have the same deal going on right now that includes a rear iron sight..

ETAA: PSA website has Ruger AR556 with rear iron sight for $460 free shipping.

They're pretty much the same thing. All ARs at that level are made with the same shite

I would go with the S&W or Ruger over the PSA. The quality control is better and they are priced lower than ever right now. PSA's customer service is a nightmare to get a hold of and to deal with. Also, their blatant disregard for the security breech in their CC processing and the way they've handled it or not handled it shows they are a shitty company with no moral backbone.

Only difference really is Ruger is 1:8 and Smith is 1:9. I would probably go ruger just between the two. You may want to look at the Sulzer Recon as well. It's not much more expensive and he uses BA barrels (at least I still think he does) which guarantee sub moa. He also cerakotes his guns.

This plus the fact that the Ruger has a machined front sight block rather than a MIMed one are the only differences I can think of. They also have gotten pretty similar accuracy results from numerous testers. Either one should suit you fine for you application.
