Roundup and briars

Trying to kill a wild area in my yard. Roundup is killing everything but the dew-berry vines. Do I need a different chemical? Brush killer maybe?

Vine-x is the most common herbicide I've heard of using to fight vines.
Round-up kills everything, but binds to the soil and creates a dead space. In six months, you'll have all kinds of thistles and vines.
Crossbow or 2,4-D are broadleaf killers that don't effect grass. However, they can volatize and end up killing other plants you didn't mean to kill.

What does this mean? And I dont want to look it up!

I may be wrong, but in this context I believe that is when a selective chemical becomes un-selective

Mix some roundup and Atrazine. Atrazine should smoke the vines and give you some residual.

I agree. We used to mix it with round up in a large sprayer and kill everything

Some offroad diesel in a sprayer...

Roundup does not binded with the soil. Roundup works though the leaves.

Volatize means when a liquid chemical transitions into the vapor phase.
This is bad b/c (as Downshift said) a selective chemical becomes un-selective. The wind can blow it anywhere. Just watch the time of day and wind. You'll be fine.

Roundup doesn't bind to the soil, it's a contact non-selective herbicide. It only kills what it's sprayed on. If you don't want it to ever grow, mix arsenal at 1/100. One gallon arsenal to 100 gallons water. You can also use Grazon, Surmont which has some residual or Milestone. These will all kill the vines and other broadleaves.

Correct. 2-4D will help with the vines. Won't hurt grass other than St Aug. Mix roundup and 2-4D.

How about products I can get at Lowes?
Posted on 5/19/11 at 10:45 am to AlxTgr
You're going to be limited at Lowe's. You may find a 2-4,D mix, or Spectracide, which is Gramaxone. It will kill everything but it grows back. Find a co-op and tell them what you are trying to do and they can help you out.

Will roundup alone kill the briars if I am persistant?
Posted on 5/19/11 at 10:49 am to LSUballs
You'll have to get somebody with a license to get the nasty shite. My experience with off the shelf herbicides is limited to roundup and 2-4D. Everything else I ever fool with requires a license to purchase (and technically, to apply).

Yes. Roundup is great shite. You may need to add a surfactant though. Some vines are very oily and prevent the chemical from kicking it's arse. A surfactant (basically just a soap) will dissolve the protective oils and also help the chemical stick to the plant rather than just bouncing off.
Something else to consider though is that once you kill em, you will still have a briar patch. It'll just be a dead one. You'll have to bush hog it or something to get rid of it.
