I dropped my 20 yr old VX2 4-12 twice on the same weekend this year, checked it to make sure it was still on, and then dropped a deer at 230.
Leupolds are the best value out there. JMO of course
Key words= 20 years old. Dont buy a NEW one.

You’re saying that someone should spend 2 to 3 times the amount of money to get something “they can trust”… For whitetail hunting…. That’s ridiculous.
Is it? If a once in a lifetime animal gets in yur crosshairs.

I don’t care what kind of scope I have, if it takes a hit, I’m going to check zero at the next opportunity. Sometimes that’s not possible, as I mentioned, my last drop was shortly followed by a perfect 300 yard shot with a Leupold.
How old is your scope?
quote:No. He can get what he wants. He said "a good scope". Leupold doesnt make that anymore. The Mark 5s are the best of the lineup and they are more than $1500. I have a VX5 and Im replacinf my scopes with bomb proof scopes. Why? Because I can afford it and I dont want to be second guessing anything.
The guy is asking for advice on a new scope. The internet has a tendency to recommend the best or the best “bombproof” bullshite that is completely unnecessary in a lot of cases.
You pay $1000+ for a lease or hunt out of state, your rifle accidentally hits the ground while you are out there and your prize animal steps out, you not sighting in shite. You'll take the shot and if you miss or make a bad shot then what/? You'll kick yourself in the arse for having that optic on your rifle. Leupold is not what it used to be and should NOT be recommeded for NEW optics unless you get the Mark 5s.

No need to get too fancy - you can get a Leupold VX-3HD with CDS for 1/2 of your max budget and have all the scope you need for a .308 deer rifle.
The CDS is pretty cool in a round like .308.

2 years old.
I’m not trying to say they’re going to stand up to abuse. I’m saying they’re a quality option for the average whitetail hunter. You could “what if” things all day but if you want to be practical, you can’t discount it.
Most of my rifles have wooden stocks. By your logic I shouldn’t take them out in the woods because there’s a chance they could fall and crack the stock, throwing my zero off.

Negative.
Leupold will work. I'm not saying they won't and they have a great warranty. But if you want an optic you can trust for any accident that may occur, it's not it. My $3000+ scope is in Austria right now getting repaired, no fault of my own. Didn't fall or anything. Just parts decided to fall out. I'm keeping it but I'm also getting scopes I can trust because my kids might get careless and I don't want them missing due to non durable optics.
The question asked was what good scope should he get? Why take the chance on an optic that CAN fail?
The problem is that everyone wants a light scope.
You can have clear, durable, or light. But you can't have all 3. The price will reflect on whatever you decide.

Best glass is Swarovski but they are fragile
I’m not a very adventurous rifle hunter though. Imma take my side by side down the trail, park about 100 yds away, and walk down trails smoothed with a box blade to a nice shooting house that has a staircase
I leave all the hiking and stuff for when I’m bow hunting.

They are. Mine is in Austria right now and I baby it. I dont trust it but I can damn near hunt in the dark with it. The glass is phenomenal.

I'll try to find it but there was a review on the mark 4 where the guy put it through a standardized durability/reliability test and it performed poorly.
Was that the new mark4hd or whatever they call it now?
That sucks.

He tested Leupold VX5s also and they failed miserably. Leupold QC is like Remington QC.

I think so. I picked one up used and didnt really start reading about it until after id received it. So far so good. It tracks well.

I have a couple of vortex and I really like them. I also have some vortex bino’s.
There warranty is really hard to beat.
Zeiss conquest are really good scopes also. Don’t waste ur money on a Nightforce unless u buying top tear. My buddy has the SHV and my vortex beats it hands down.
Whatever u buy I would buy a 30mm tube and a 50mm objective

Zeiss V4 3-12x56 is the best in class in that price range in my opinion.

Trijicon has something for everybody these days and its all excellent stuff. They make the only normal afforxable durable 1" tube scopes on the market. They really should have the bulk of the market share these days

Would like to stay under $1200. If it's a noticeably better product, I can increase that.
I don't know what sort of eyeballs you have, but mine start running out of reasons to spend more on glass after $500 or so. Anybody can sell you good glass for a few hundred bucks; focus on ruggedness and ability to keep zero.

Trijicon Huron $470
This is what OP needs. Affordable, lightweight, bombproof. If he is going to start dabbling in long range this is a good place to start. It can be dialed up and down all day and will always return to zero correctly.

I bought a Meopta Optika 6 a few years ago, IIRC it was in the $600 range, could not be happier. As someone noted above, at this stage in my life, the quality of the glass exceeds the quality of my eyesight. I’ve shot a bunch of WT in the neck since then.

I love mine. When I bought it I put it side-by-side with my other "good" scope, a Razor HD, and I can't really tell them apart. I sure as hell couldn't if you just handed me one in the woods. Both of them are noticeably better than a Philippines-made Viper or an older Weaver that are in my house somewhere, but the truth is both of those average scopes have perfectly functional glass. It's the rest of the scope I worry about.
