Looking to get a new/used rifle for deer hunting. Trying not to break the bank. Looking to get a rifle + scope for $500 or less (if that is even possible). Please send me what would be a good reliable rifle in that range.

Truthfully, at that price range, you may want to consider a 35 Whalen if you hunt in Louisiana. You can pick up a rifle/scope combo in that price range, and you will have the ability to hunt in both Primitive and the normal Rifle Season.

Savig axis.. whatever caliber you want. Best bany for the buck.. then get you a scope. Can keep it all under 500 and hunt just fine

Ruger American is another good choice you can get in that price range. Locally I can get the rifle for $300 a couple times a year. With Black Friday coming up, should be able to find a 3-9 Nikon for <$200.

Academy normally puts a nice Nikon Prostaff scope for $129 on Black Friday.

I'd look at the following:

- Ruger American
- TC Compass
- Savage Axis

You can find all three for under $300 if you shop for deals.

Right now, Savage is running a $75 rebate on the Axis. The package deals in the last link are perfect to get started. You can upgrade the scope later or replace right away with a entry level Vortex or Nikon and have a cheap backup.

If I was buying right now, I'd buy the Savage Axis at that line in 6.5CM or .308. Both would be fine deer rifles.

Bought one for my children. I have multiple rifles, and the Axis shoots as good or better than all of them. It's a fine rifle. Don't let the name or price fool you.

You can buy the scoped version of the Remington 783 for $400 I think.

I dont like Remingtons business practices, but the 783 is ridiculously accurate for its price point. It isnt smoothe and polished, but review after review has indicated that it is a tack driver.

Can't go wrong with a used 30-06.

LA Sportsman has a 7 mag for $400.
30-06 for $375
Another 30-06 with scope for $295.

If $ is your biggest concern hit up a pawn shop. You may be able to get more bang for your buck.
