Hey guys,
I thought I’d some info on a new gun I just bought, a Canik TP9SF. Canik guns are made in Turkey. They seem to have a pretty good reputation from reading on the ‘net. The “SF” in the name stands for “Special Forces.” It's chambered in 9mm. It is a Striker fired gun (although they call it “single action”) w/ a 4.5” barrel, accessory rail, interchangable backstrap and double stack mag (18 round capacity). It has both a loaded chamber indictor and striker indicator. It features 3 dot sights that are windage adjustable. The package includes a plastic gun case w/ an outside the waistband holster, 2 mags, mag loader, instruction manual and 2 cleaning rods (1 has a slotted end while the other has a bristle brush). As w/ Glocks, there are no external safety levers but there is a safety device at the front of the trigger.

First impressions: this is a nice looking good, especially w/ the desert tan Cerakote surface. All the controls are well-place and work fine. The trigger moves about 3/8” before it’s actually engaged, but breaks at a clean 4.5#. The reset is short and reliable. The gun breaks down VERY easily. For me, the gun points well and feels a lot better in my hands than does a Glock. Sights are fine. The loaded chamber indicator is unobtrusive, unlike Ruger’s “Shark fin” indicator. Using Winchester “White Box” 115 gr FMJ ammo, accuracy was satisfactory w/he first 6 shots going into a nice 2” group at 7 yards. I ran 25 rounds through it (I had another gun I had to shoot before it got dark) and had one stove pipe followed by a failure to feed, back to back on the first mag.

I like the gun and plan to shoot it a lot more. I’m not sure what function it will serve, but it may become a truck gun for me. I’m thinking of modifying the OWB plastic retention holster and attaching it in my truck cab.

The Canik cost only $319 brand new from www.certerfireguns.com. Email communication from the seller was good. Shipping was free. I placed the order Fri PM and it was shipped on Mon. I’ll give an update after I’ve put a bunch more rounds through it.
The total package.

Sight picture and striker indicator.

Controls and loaded chamber indicator (the little red dot just above the chamber).

FIrst group.

I wish I had a local shooting range, but unfortunately I don't. What did he think of the gun?

I didn't get to speak to him after he shot. I was working the check in desk so I only got to see it when he checked in. Nice looking gun and I've been hearing a lot of good things about Canik for a little while now.

Can you post a pic of the top of the gun. Im looking at thw picture they are showing on the website for the TP9sf but the picture is showing the decocker on it.

LINK

The decocker is a no go for me but Im pretty sure the SF model doesnt have it on top.

Very good first review. I shot one of these at the range recently and my first impressions were:

1. Very smooth trigger (especially at that price)
2. I like the 18 round mag
3. The slide and sights are pretty tall (also higher bore axis) but you can't really feel it much, just requires some adjusting to the tallness
4. Quite a good value with all the included accessories (even if they aren't top notch)

What do you think may have caused these? Was the gun still soaked in packing grease still? I haven't seen erratic failures with their regular model, but I have seen it on the elite models.

I feel the same way about the decocker. And you're right in that the TF model does NOT have the decocker. The SA (explain why one would put a decocker on a single action only gun ) and the SA/DA models do have a decocker. I'll try to get a pic tomorrow of the top of the slide.

I don't know what was the problem. Just gives me an excuse to shoot it some more!! I've marked the mag so I'll be on the look out for any more problems. The mags are made by Mec-Gar and seem to be decent quality. I cleaned the gun pretty good, oiled it a little and spu a small amount of grease the rails of the slide before shooting it. It came from the factory pretty clean.

You'll enjoy this gun. I own two, both the TP9SA and the TP9SF, in FDE. Strangely enough, I have experienced a few stove pipings in the SF version as well, but NOT in the SA... can't explain that. However, those were early on. Now that I've cycled a couple thousand rounds through it, I've had no issues. I've said it before and I'll say it again, regardless of the OUTSTANDING price tag for these things, they are my absolute favorite pistols.

Also, I did like you mentioned and modified the holster that comes with the gun to have it fit underneath my steering wheel column. Perfect set up.

Enjoy the the gun!

Get you some (Break-Free) CLP cleaner... it's a 3 in one type deal. Helped out with my issues (along with putting more rounds through).

Check the ammo also. I've never shot the Winchester pistol ammo, but I have had issues with reloads (gunk build up on the slide). Surprisingly enough, my Canik eats through the steel cased "Independence" 9mm ammo. It also cycles Rem UMC ammo well.

Thanks for the review.

The name caused me to recall a resume' I saw last week. This guy had been a macanick for 10 years and appeared to be a very well-read individual. Just a bit over-qualified for what the job needed.

That is what M.S. is using now for the point shoot competition...picked up a few hundreths of a second when he switched...he loves his.

Just looked at the specs and the TP9SF is about the same size of the Glock 17.

I think I may actually pay a little bit more and pick up the new Elite version. Its the same size as the Glock 19 compact.

The Tungsten finish looks pretty good when i held it act Academy. I think Ill buy it online though and save some money from the Academy price.

Section225,
You're right. The TP9SF does NOT have the decocker whereas the TP9SA DOES have the decocker. The pic you linked shows the TP9SA w/ the decocker. Here's a link w/ a pic of both the TP9SF (in the foreground w/o decocker) and the TP9SA (in the background w/ decocker) . You'll also notice the smaller rear sights on the decocker version. Like you, a decocker on a single action semi-automatic was a no go.

[/img] [/img]I by no means know much about pistols and this is my 2nd pistol (don't grill me). Here's my quick tidbit on the Canik TP9SF Elite...

Took the gun to the range today for the first time. I used 9mm 115 grain brass. Now, I watched videos of guys using other metals and grains but did not see them use this combo.

First 2 or 3 rounds went fine. After that in the next 15 round, the gun stovepiped 3 times. I'm almost positive it was nerves and amateur moves on my part. My buddy loaded a magazine and shot 10 without any issues. Told me to hold the gun tighter. The next 180 rounds went smooth and did not have one problem with discharging or misfeeding. I did not notice any of the casing ejecting in weird directions. They all either fell in front of me or to the right. Nothing went over the dividers.

The gun was smooth. I have only shot a 9mm Ruger and Glock, and a Glock 40 caliber and a Glock 357. All 4 of those guns beat my hands up it seemed or exhausted my grip...again don't kill me with newbie stuff.

The sight is a fiber optic without rear dots! And I would like to believe they were good as I was fairly accurate in the distances I was shooting.

The trigger is smooth. I liked it a lot and my buddy even complimented the trigger.

That being said, it's a new gun and I do not know jack shite about this stuff. Just giving my review.
