Just got a quote to make this repair and it is almost $2k! That seems pretty high. Any insight on how much something like this should cost? Will get 2nd opinion.

How hard is it to access?

Is it the whole blower unit or just the coil?

Does seem really high though unless you are missing something

Going through this right now. We have replaced the Goodman coil under warranty before and now has another leak. The goodman coils are obviously crap and we decided to have the entire air handler replaced with a new brand. It's about $1,000 more to replace air handler instead of just coils but comes with warranty and getting rid of crappy goodman. $2,780 for new air handler

It's the coil in the attic.

Just the coil from what he explained.

just put in a carrier unit. Goodman coils went to shite about 8 years ago with their composite aluminum/copper coils causing corrosion( electrolysis) .

this is the price delivered for an entire new Carrier 2 ton unit with 10kw heat strips installed. Free shipping as well.

Have a HVAC technician come out to remove old unit and install new unit.

I paid one $200 to do mine and he was amazed at how cheap I got the stuff for and had it delivered to my house.

Did they break down the cost for you?

How much for the the Coil?
How much for the Refrigerant?
How much for the labor?

You may want to ask for the price for replacing the whole Air Handler.

Again seems high to me for a 2 ton unit unless the attic is very tight and hard to access or something else complicates the job.

Does't pull up on the website.

Do you have the number for a good HVAC technician in the BR/Surrounding area?

sorry, I edited the post. I found a guy on FB marketplace that came highly recommended. I'm in the BR area. This was 2 years ago. I got the same cabinet but mine is the 2 1/2 ton unit. The cabinet seals very well and comes with everything. New variable speed blower and evap coil. I like that the control board isn't one of those fancy digital boards that always seem to go bad.

Hoping your existing unit is a R410A unit and not the old R22

When replacing the air handler you need to consider a few things before you purchase one;

Will the new unit fit in same location as the old.

Will the Plenum (ducts) connect the same or what mods. need to be made.

Will the wiring and tubing all be long enough to reach new unit.

Normally replacing the coil is the cheapest but sometimes it makes more sense to upgrade, I would consult with a couple of companies if you aren't feeling good about your current situation but I wouldn't buy a unit without a deal in place for install and the approval of the guy installing!!!

How old is your unit?

I had 3 goodman units and had to replace two last year because the coils are shite. My units were 10yrs old but only had a 5 yr warranty.

I hate everything about Goodman. Replaced with Carrier units. The builder of my house put in units that were too small so we went up in size. Replace a 2 ton with a 2.5 ton and a 3 ton with a 4 ton.

have to be very careful going up on tonnage. Even though they will cool quicker, they will not run long enough to remove enough moisture from the home.

you need to check that it's not a R22 unit. If so it is illegal for a tech to even service the unit and an entire new system using R410A or equivalent will be needed.

Seems like I've heard from multiple hvac guys the saying there is nothing good about a goodman.

Like I said, the units that were replace were too small. I could have gone from a 2 to a 3 but he thought the 2.5 would be fine since the 4 would be helping out.
My house has 10 foot and 20 foot ceiling down and 9 ft up.

Lots of volume.

OP, your units are r22 if they're that old.

You will have to replace the condenser outside as well since you will need to upgrade the system to the r410 refrigerant ad Bedhog said.

I was told the same and just decided to replace everything since the units were complete shite to begin with and their age.

If it's 11yrs old it will definitely be r22 but there will be a sticker with the info on the condenser.

It will have the model number serial number, etc.

the tag on the outside condensing unit will say what it is. I've seen R410A units older than that so it's not for sure a R22 unit.

R410A was introduced by Carrier in 1996 WIKI
