Did something stupid today. Went cobia fishing in the Chesapeake by myself. I was running the windlass pulling the anchor up and I thought by the sound everything was working ok. I go to the front of the boat and see that the rope is in a huge knot jammed in the gears. It won't move in either direction... should I just start cutting rope or what?

First question...did you catch anything?

Secondly, can you take it apart and get to it?? If knot, cut that shite.

sounds like you did more than one stupid thing. Unfortunately, if you cannot free the gears you may have to cut your way through. I assume you were able to get the anchor up enough to get under way.

I was only in 25' and was able to retrieve the anchor...I just got this used boat and it looks like part of the problem is the rope is a rat's nest in the compartment. I checked that the windlass worked but did not look at the spool..another mistake

Enjoy the new boat. Knotted anchor rode is a small matter. I wish I had been out on the water today.
