Looking for anyone who has or shot the 783 with the 16.5 inch barrel. I am looking at one in 6.5 Creedmoor. I know it’s a low end rifle with some upside. But it will be a present for the wife. That I get to play with.

With the questionable quality of Remington firearms today I'd steer clear of especially their budget rifles. If you're wanting to save some cash and get into a decent 6.5 for a good price I'd lean towards a Ruger American Predator. It'll be a med-heavy barrel and threaded and likely very accurate.

Son shot a Ruger Compact with 16.5” barrel as a kid. Avoid the short barrel. Too loud.

I used to love Remington but I wouldn’t touch their rifles now out of sheer principle. Pissed me off when they went cheap on a trigger system that put people in danger. If you go cheap, do it on everything but what makes the rifle discharge. Once that rifle fired, on purpose of accidentally, you can’t take that bullet back.

I actually purchased the 783 compact in a .308 for my oldest to shoot about two months ago. Slapped a Nikon 4-12x50 BDC on it and sighted it in for him using the Hornady reduced recoil ammo. He shoots it well and it fits him nicely, believe LOP is 12 3/8”. It is a little heavier than some of the other similar rifles but that will only help keep the recoil down so that wasn’t a turn off for me. Recoil pad is pretty thick and soft. Trigger isn’t bad at all for the price. His came with a non namebrand junk scope and rings, DNZ makes a nice set for it. The mag leaves a lot to be desired imo. The bolt is pretty stiff to close/open once a round is chambered.

He hit it on the dot. I got a .308 with the 16" because I wanted a shorter gun to hunt in some thicker stuff and really just wanted a new gun. I put a Nikon 3-9 on it and it shoots really well for the price. Trigger isn't the best or the worst. I'd like to get a suppressor for it at some point.

Look at the Savage Axis 2, Heavy Barrel. $389 at Wally world. It has the Accu-trigger and is a much better rifle than the 783 IMO.

I just bought my son for Christmas a Savage Axis II XP in 7mm-08 off GunBroker for $369. There was a $60 rebate so it was $309+$20 FFL transfer. This one came with the 3-9x40 Nikon BDC scope as well.

Can't wait to see how it shoots.

We like the 783. Probably 5 or 6 in our family. I have 2 and had one threaded and suppressed. Great guns cant say enough about them. Very accurate cover our groups with the bottom of a coke can at 150yds.

there isn't a gun that is currently made by Remington that I would even consider buying. Not one.

Such a shame with Remington to. I own a 1994 model BDL 30-06 that is butter smooth and a tack driver.

Bought my wife the model 783 .308 in that sandy beige color, it is extremely accurate! Has a vortex cross fire II mounted on it. Will bust water bottles at 300 yds all day! I also have it in .270 as a backup rifle when we take trips. I like the weight distribution and smooth action. Never leaves my cheek between shots. Like glass!
