Spinning reels are better for Mangroves but open faced are much better for jigging/ fishing with weights.
An open face is a spinning reel.
Open faced spinning, as opposed to closed face spinning "push button" zebco 808 types.
Also, a Carolina setup will fall weight-first, often causing the bait to flutter/twirl and wrap around the main line if you have too much line between the hook and swivel.

Roger if you are fishing for big snapper you don't go to the bottom. No swivel cast up current, kind of why a spinning reel works best. If you are fishing say 100 foot of water cast 50-60 feet let it fall natural and repeat. You generally will not catch small snapper this way and the ones you do catch hooking them high in the water column helps for survival. If you do want to drop to the bottom try whole mullet or Spanish mackerel. Ohh and don't use the spinning gear when dropping to the bottom. Biggest snapper I ever caught was on a live scamp using a 1/2 oz sinker on a knocker rig

Yes way!!! I started snapper fishing at 8 years old with dad. Actually did it for a living for years. I'm now recreational only, big fish no leader small weight. Hell we've all caught big snapper on drift lines haven't we? My dad is still old school and wants to rig up big rods and big weights and I fight him on it. I'm all about fun now and you can only catch two what fun is there in dropping it to the bottom and cranking one up on 80# line.

Knocking them out and heading after something else to load up the icechest.

Get something you can use for more than just red snapper.
I like the Penn Squall lever drags, Avets, or Shimano Tekotas if you want the level wind.
Set them up on a ugly stick tiger extra heavy rods. I like the shorter rods but if the second purpose needs casting than get longer rods.
For beginners I would just string them with 50lb mono. Move to braid when you are comfortable and settle in to your style of fishing.
Then buy the tackle to make some rigs before you go out. I make half 4oz and half 8oz. Just make sure you don't let the weight slide up the line or leaders too long.

I use level wind reels for snapper since 90% of the time the crew i have is very inexperienced and the level wind make life easier. The Penn 330GTI reels on a short stout rod work well. I have some 90's vintage ambassador 7700s on penn tuna sticks right now but the drag on those is marginal. People underestimate how hard a 10+ lb snapper 100 ft down can pull. My favorite rods right now are my Fin-nor lethal 100 spinning reels on penn blue water carnage jigging rods. I have those spooled with 80 lb power pro braid. Lots of fun to catch snapper on a butterfly jig.

Penn Spinfisher V 7500 with 30 lb mono 3/4 oz sinker tied straight to a 5/0 circle hook. That is my big snapper set up lots of fun to catch em on and if you are fishing for big snapper don't use a weight over 1 oz.

7/0 is the best size hook for any size snapper. You can use as much weight as you want, the key is to have a long leader coming off of the weight so it "free floats".

i was laughing that 3/4oz weight wont get 10 feet under water on a calm current day

Just offering help. I've caught over 400,000 pounds of snapper commercially back in the day. I've also caught tons as a private recreational boat captain. 0/7 circle hooks will kill 12 inchers you have to throw back up to high 30 pounders all day long. Weight can be compensated by presentation.

your drag should be 1/4 to 1/2 our line strength. The damn fish are 8-20 lbs 95% of the time and may get to 35 or so but they are not 50 lbs yellowfins or something. 50 lb test is fine. U drop down with 100 lb test and 8oz lead u are going to catch shite fish. I would use fluorocarbon leaders. Big fish are almost always smart fish and leader shy

The big snapper are always on the top of the school/wreck/structure, too. Catching snapper is one of the easiest species to catch. Op shouldn't have a problem.

Mono gives you more stretch which I really don't like for snapper fishing. Braid is better with flour leader but if u r fishing wrecks too close to rig it will cut on u and can be a pain to rerig when they are biting. I always make a dozen or so leaders with hooks for quicker change.
Then there is the circle hook debate. I use 5-7 blood red Youzi or Gami circle hooks , but u dont set a circle hook so i typically lose my first 2 to 3 fish before I adjust. But great for kids to learn when u feel bite just reel in.
You charter guy is right, this big fish on bottom is bullshite. They don't need cover so they are usually top or right outside the bait ball. Don't ever intentionally let bait go to bottom and reel up either, that is also bullshite.
Also, chop up some pogies cigars and let them drift off, this will let u see current. Then a minute or so later drop a few with hooks in them. I use flour leader or light line, drag set very light. If there are not a long a kings around u can nail big snappers. I also like a like bait halfway down and often a big metal jig about the same just going up and down with the waves. Very light drag. Have caught everything from Cobia, AJ's, Grouper, Dolphin, kings, etc doing that. Almost always over 20lbs.
Since u only have a few fish a person, I would suggest u drift fish until u really find them, if not always.
Finally, do not be an idiot and tie off on the rig down current. (Yes I have done it too) The good fish will always be up current from you. I promise.
Typical Sow Rig.

3 way swivel rig.
chumming. U dont need a chum churn. (I have had three, all are at the bottom of the ocean) lol. U can cut them up and do same thing or add pogy oil and chum bucket. It is easy easy and fun for kids.

Spot on and the exact reason they are on top. If you can read a bottom machine and know what a pipeline looks like in open water, that's really the only place you will find huge snapper by themselves, because there is no where to hide. A small bare spot on a pipleline exposed out of the mud or sand, will hold monster snapper. They are there for eating the smaller fish, and that's it. Not saying you can't catch huge snapper at rigs or wrecks, but bare pipelines with a Christmas tree or two, is where there are sows only. No small snapper.

I mean this is a serious question...... how do you expect to get the bait down to the structure when there is current and you only put on 3/4 oz lead? on a medium day 6oz are going of at a 30 degree angle.
