S&W 686 is about as good as they get. They (most quality revolvers) are quite expensive these days.

I highly recommend developing your shooting skills using a quality revolver. It will help you learn better trigger control techniques.

Ruger SP101 4 inch

Only weighs 29.5 oz

Perfect gun if this is your woods guns or side arm for a hunt. Will not weigh you down like other 4 inch revolvers do.

Did OP ever give a budget?

If not, we should assume he's filthy rich and suggest he either get a colt Python if he needs a double action.

And if he doesn't, he should absolutely get a freedom arms in .475 linebaugh

lsu xman, Congrats on the new gun....once you get it! It's hard to go wrong w/ a nice 357 Magnum. Go w/ full stoked loads for various types of hunting or drop down to less inexpensive and easier to handle 38 Spec for practice/plinking. Sounds like you're not an experienced handgun shooter and that's ok. If you're an experienced shooter or a handloader, I'd also suggest considering a 44 Mag revolver, using 44 Special loads for playing around. As far as specific guns, I'd look at a Ruger GP100. Barrel length is a personal matter as different revolvers handle differently depending on the shooters. 4" barrels are convenient for carry, but will have noticeably more muzzle blast/flash than will a gun w/ a longer barrel. Yeah, a longer barrel will weigh a little more, but that extra weight w/ help dampen the recoil. A nice holster and belt can make a big difference when carrying a heavier handgun.. Having said that, I don't own a handgun in 357 Magnum, but I do have two Ruger Redhawks w/ 5 1/2" barrels, one in 44 Mag and one in 45 Colt.. And yes, the Ruger Redhawk is a very good gun, but I don't think it's currently chambered in 357 Mag.

No wau

A .357 magnum revolver with a 4" barrel is the most versatile handgun there is IMO.

No disagreement from me! I even have dies to handload for 357 Mag. Growing up, I always dreamed of getting a Ruger Blackhawk in 357 Mag. Money was tight for a number of years. When I finally had the $$ to buy a handgun, I went w/ a 44 Mag Ruger Redhawk instead. I'll get a 357 "some day."

If you're just looking for something fun and affordable to shoot, why not consider a black powder revolver? Those reproduction Colts are a blast (pun intended) to shoot and you can shoot them all day without the high cost of regular ammo. And don't think for a minute, that a black powder handgun has no power. Load up a .44 dragoon or Walker Colt and see for yourself... Love these old wheel guns. They've got their own beauty. LINK

I've had my Ruger SP101 over 10 years now. My only regret is I don't own more revolvers.

This for sure. So many ammo options and a 4" is good for carry or home.

One of the things in life I most dread is having to clean a blackpowder gun...... I admire those who have a spotless clean black powder gun.

Yeah, but it's worth it! At least it is to me! Love the sound and smell of that black powder.

I'm going to see how much I fall in love with shooting my friend's 357. Want to have something very different for a 2nd piece.

If you're willing to spend the cheese you can get both of these... I introduce to you the Coonan 1911 in 357 Magnum.

It is actually a very practical self defense gun and isn't gimmicky at all. I've read stunning reports of reliability from them.

But if you're not willing to spend over a grand, I'd suggest the Ruger GP100 with a 4" barrel. I think it's a great all-around revolver that can drop a hog or a human if the time comes.

Yea. Looks pretty cool. I would probably opt for the compensated model with that little fire-breathing bastard!

Thanks for everyone's input. I just picked up a 686+ 5" bbl. Waiting for ammo delivery. I had the pleasure of shooting my friend's GP100 6" bbl, but only in 38sp. Didn't have any magnum rounds with us. Very soft shooting with a long trigger that I'm not use to.

Any reputable guys in B.R that does trigger work?
